Description
Born over four centuries ago as an orphan named Ryos, Rogue Cheney was sent to the future through the Eclipse Gate on July 7, X777. Raised by the Shadow Dragon Skiadrum, he mastered Shadow Dragon Slayer Magic. He long believed he had euthanized his ailing foster parent, only to later discover this was an illusion; Skiadrum had implanted his soul into Rogue’s body to heal and develop antibodies against dragonization. Rogue further augmented his power by implanting Dragon Lacrima, becoming a Third Generation Dragon Slayer. He idolized Gajeel Redfox and aspired to join Phantom Lord in his youth, but ultimately became a member of Sabertooth after Phantom Lord dissolved.

Physically, Rogue presents as a slim young man of average height. He sports messy black hair, typically brushed over his right eye, and possesses snake-like red pupils. A thin scar crosses the bridge of his nose, a remnant from a battle with dragons. His attire shifted from a black cape bearing Sabertooth’s guild mark on his left shoulder to a leopard-patterned kimono during the Tartaros conflict, where he also wore his hair in a ponytail. He occasionally carried a katana, though seldom used it in combat.

Rogue’s personality was reserved and introspective, contrasting sharply with Sabertooth’s initial ruthless culture. He questioned the guild's harsh treatment of members deemed failures, like Yukino Aguria’s excommunication, emphasizing camaraderie despite peer dismissiveness. He consistently showed kindness, especially towards his Exceed partner Frosch, reassuring it against abandonment fears and reacting violently only when Frosch was threatened. Unlike many Sabertooth members, he exhibited no sadistic tendencies, refusing to engage in or endorse unnecessary cruelty, such as averting his gaze during Lucy Heartfilia’s torture. He suffered from motion sickness, common among Dragon Slayers, and disliked daytime due to his shadow-based magic.

Key relationships defined Rogue. Frosch’s survival proved pivotal; an alternate timeline where Frosch died revealed Rogue’s vulnerability to darkness, leading him down a villainous path. In the primary timeline, Frosch’s presence stabilized him. He shared a close partnership with Sting Eucliffe as Sabertooth’s Twin Dragons, performing complex Unison Raids, though their dynamic included conflicts, like a temporary split after Sting consumed a flower meant to calm Rogue. He idolized Gajeel as a sworn brother figure but later acknowledged Natsu Dragneel’s superior power during the Grand Magic Games.

Rogue’s character development centered on Sabertooth’s transformation from cold elitism to unity. Confronting Fairy Tail’s Natsu and Gajeel during the Grand Magic Games, he activated Dragon Force but lost. This defeat forced him to reevaluate Sabertooth’s lack of bonds. Witnessing Natsu defend Yukino against Master Jiemma solidified his understanding of true guild camaraderie. Post-Games, Sabertooth reformed under Sting’s leadership, with Rogue handling administrative duties. In the Tartaros arc, his future self arrived to kill Lucy Heartfilia, aiming to prevent Frosch’s death and defeat Acnologia; present-day Rogue rejected this dark path after securing Frosch’s survival, suppressing his inner shadows.

As a Shadow Dragon Slayer, Rogue consumed and manipulated shadows for offense and evasion. His techniques included Shadow Drive for phasing into intangible forms and the Shadow Dragon’s Roar for concentrated blasts. His only solo fight occurred during the Eclipse arc against Gajeel, where he was overwhelmed. He rarely fought alone, excelling in teamwork, particularly with Sting in Unison Raids like Holy Shadow Dragon’s Rough Silk. Despite mastering Dragon Force, he never attained an alternate elemental form like his peers; his future self achieved White Shadow Dragon abilities only by killing Sting—a fate he avoided.
