Erhardt Von Rheindars is a disgraced Luftwaffe fighter pilot, reassigned after abandoning his Focke-Wulf Fw 190 when his wingman was shot down during a night reconnaissance operation. His critical new mission involves escorting a captured American B-17 bomber carrying a prototype German atomic bomb to Peenemünde. For this task, he flies a high-altitude prototype Ta 152 fighter, addressing prior complaints about aircraft performance. The bomber also transports his childhood sweetheart, Melhenna, and her father, Professor Bauffstein, the bomb's developer. Before takeoff, Melhenna implores Rheindars to ensure the bomber's destruction to prevent the weapon's use, accepting the fatal cost to herself and her father. During the escort, Rheindars engages attacking RAF Spitfires, downing two. Honoring Melhenna's plea and choosing moral integrity over duty, he deliberately allows a third Spitfire to destroy the bomber. He then shoots down the final Spitfire and departs, declaring himself "the man who did not sell his soul to the Devil." In a separate ground incident, Rheindars briefly draws a Luger P08 pistol during a confrontation with German troops.
