Description
Zeref Dragneel, known as The Black Wizard, originated over 400 years ago when dragons orphaned him and fatally wounded his younger brother Natsu. Desperate to resurrect Natsu, he pursued forbidden magic at Mildian Magic Academy, defying the god Ankhseram’s sacred teachings. This defiance invoked the Curse of Contradiction: immortality paired with uncontrollable death magic that annihilated all life around him whenever he valued it. Expelled after his first emotional outburst killed everyone nearby, he wandered consumed by guilt and longing for death. He created Etherious demons—Deliora, Lullaby, and Tartaros members like Mard Geer—hoping one would grow strong enough to kill him.
His resurrection efforts succeeded with Natsu, transformed into the half-demon, half-human Etherious Natsu Dragneel (E.N.D.), designed as Zeref’s ultimate executioner. Zeref entrusted Natsu to the dragon Igneel for upbringing and Dragon Slayer training. Later, Zeref aided Igneel and other dragons in sending Natsu and four Dragon Slayers through the Eclipse Gate to the future to battle the dragon Acnologia.
The curse fractured Zeref’s psyche: a vulnerable state mourning lives lost, a detached "awakened" state coldly punishing evil like the dark mage Hades, and a contradictory state clashing violently in thoughts and goals. Isolation ended when he met Mavis Vermillion near Magnolia’s forests. Teaching her foundational magic forged a deep bond, culminating in a kiss that triggered his curse, draining Mavis’s life force into a coma. Devastated, Zeref delivered her to Fairy Tail and vanished, adopting the alias Emperor Spriggan to rule the Alvarez Empire. There, he treated subjects as pawns in a "strategy game" to suppress his curse.
As emperor, Zeref sought Fairy Heart—Mavis’s preserved body and infinite magic source—to power the Neo Eclipse spell, rewriting history to erase his existence. Invading Ishgar to claim it, he battled Natsu, who learned of his demonic origins as E.N.D. Though Natsu failed to kill him, Mavis’s revival and reciprocated love nullified their curses through mutual affection, ending both their lives.
Zeref retained a youthful appearance despite his age, with black hair, sharp canines, and eyes shifting to red with black-ringed pupils when enraged. He wore high-collared robes (red or black) with gold trim and a draped white toga, later switching to a black-and-white imperial outfit. His magic encompassed Black Arts, Living Magic (to create demons), Ankhseram Black Magic (death waves like Death Predation and Death Orb), Immobilization Magic (freezing time), and Fire Magic. The curse granted high-speed regeneration and immunity to aging.
He fathered August with Mavis, named for their meeting month, and Larcade Dragneel, though the latter’s origins are unclear. Zeref viewed his Alvarez commanders as tools, yet his public persona earned genuine citizen admiration.
