Professor Baffstein appears in the first segment of the anime anthology, set in August 1944. He is a German scientist involved in a top-secret military project: transporting the world's first atomic bomb aboard a captured B-17 bomber modified with German insignia, intended for deployment against an Allied capital. He boards the aircraft accompanied by his daughter, Marlena, who previously had a relationship with the protagonist, Luftwaffe pilot Erhart Von Leinders. Marlena reveals the bomb's presence to Von Leinders just before the flight.

Baffstein's mission requires Von Leinders to escort the bomber to Berlin, where the bomb will be launched via V-1 rocket. During the flight, British Spitfires intercept the aircraft. This forces Von Leinders to confront the moral implications of deploying the weapon. Baffstein and Marlena remain aboard the bomber throughout this confrontation, their fates tied to Von Leinders' ultimate decision regarding the mission.
