Description
Virgo is one of the twelve Golden Zodiac Keys, a Celestial Spirit known as "The Maiden." Her key was first owned by Everlue and is now held by Lucy Heartfilia. After a contract was severed, Virgo joined the other Zodiac spirits in rebellion against their owners.
Her physical form is malleable, shaped by the key owner's wishes. For Everlue, she took the form of a tall, overweight figure with a brutish face and two ponytails, humorously referred to as a "Gorilla Maid." Under Lucy’s ownership, she appears as a petite, beautiful young woman with short pink hair, blue eyes, and a standard maid outfit: a black undercoat, a white frilled apron, white knee socks, and black Mary Janes, typically with shackles on her wrists. In her Eclipse form, her hairstyle becomes messier and her attire shifts to militaristic wear: a black jacket with gold edges left open, a dark brown belt bearing the Virgo constellation symbol, a black mini skirt, white tights, black thigh-high heeled boots, white gloves, and a white collar-style choker. A pair of handcuffs hangs from her belt.
Virgo’s personality is formal, loyal, and obedient to her key owner. She displays masochistic tendencies, often asking if she should be punished after tasks, whether performed well or poorly. She is stiff, formal, and chaste in speech and movement, frequently addressing Lucy as "Princess." Thoughtful by nature, she once protected Lucy’s modesty in windy conditions while neglecting her own. She possesses a sense of humor, sometimes performing a comical dance, and can be over-enthusiastic, such as offering to dig unnecessary holes across Magnolia. She maintains a notebook cataloging desired punishments and may exaggerate situations, describing a light forehead flick as intensely painful. In her Eclipse form, her demeanor shifts dramatically: she becomes loud, aggressive, and sadistic, taking pleasure in torturing others and hearing them scream. She claims the word "stop" excites her and dislikes receiving pain. This form also brings hostility toward Lucy and erases memories of their past relationship.
Virgo’s background includes an initial contract with Everlue. She first appeared during Lucy and Natsu’s mission to retrieve and destroy the book *Daybreak*, summoned by Everlue to stop them. After Everlue’s arrest, she deemed their contract void and gave her key to Happy to pass to Lucy, wanting Lucy as her new owner.
She appears across numerous story arcs. In the Eisenwald arc, she dug a tunnel under a Magic Wind Wall. During the Sub-Zero Emperor Lyon arc, she dug pitfall traps and used her diving ability to save the Chief of Galuna Island from acid jelly. She was briefly summoned with Lucy’s other spirits to beg the Celestial Spirit King to save Loke. In the Oración Seis arc, she helped Lucy infiltrate the Love & Lucky guild by digging an underground passage and later tended to Lucy and Natsu’s injuries unsummoned, using her own magic power. In the Edolas arc, she fought Byro, surprising him with an underground attack and providing Lucy with the celestial spirit weapon Fleuve d’étoiles. During the Tenrou Island arc, she was summoned in the S-Class trials to exploit an opponent’s weakness to women in swimsuits and later supplied clothing from the Celestial Spirit World. In the anime-only Key of the Starry Sky arc, she assisted with distractions, repaired the Fleuve d’étoiles, and helped rescue others from traps. In the Grand Magic Games arc, she arrived with news of a crisis in the Celestial Spirit World—later revealed as a ruse to bring Lucy and her friends to a party. This caused them to miss three months of training in the human world due to time differences between worlds, for which she later apologized.
The anime-original Eclipse Celestial Spirits arc details her rebellion. With her contract severed and memories altered, Eclipse Virgo turned hostile. She opposed Lucy, Natsu, and Happy, fought using her whip and magic, and sought the Celestial Globe to achieve what she believed was true freedom for spirits. She battled Lucy in a magic library, captured Levy and Yukino, and delivered the Celestial Globe to Eclipse Leo. The rebellion was part of the Liberum ritual, which would have granted the spirits freedom at the cost of their lives after twelve days. The conflict ended when the core of the Eclipse Celestial Spirit King was destroyed, restoring the Celestial Spirit World and returning Virgo and the others to their original forms and personalities.
Virgo’s magical abilities focus on Earth Magic. She excels at creating holes and manipulating earth. Key spells include Diver, which lets her move through ground like water; Spica Hole, which creates circular holes by firing pink bullets from her fingertips; and Spica Lock, which traps opponents using earth or boulders. She is skilled in Chain Magic, using her wrist shackles or belt handcuffs to create chains that immobilize targets. She can use Transformation Magic to switch outfits, such as between her maid attire and a bikini. She is an expert whip specialist, wielding the Fleuve d’étoiles proficiently, and a capable hand-to-hand combatant, as shown in battles like the one against Torafuzar in the Tartaros arc. Like all Celestial Spirits, she is immortal unless special circumstances occur, such as staying too long in the human world and exhausting her magic power.
As a Celestial Spirit, she demonstrates deep loyalty and adaptability in appearance to suit her owner. She is a reliable asset in combat, utility tasks like digging, and item retrieval. Her relationship with Lucy Heartfilia is central, marked by mutual trust and respect despite the temporary rebellion during the Eclipse incident.
