Description
Fried Justine (or Freed Justine) is a human mage of the Fairy Tail guild, leading its Thunder God Tribe subgroup. His green Fairy Tail mark rests on the back of his left hand. Initially distant, he rarely visited the guild hall, missing events like the Phantom Lord conflict while absent from Magnolia. Tasked by Makarov Dreyar to supervise Laxus Dreyar before the Battle of Fairy Tail, this duty instead deepened his loyalty to Laxus over the guild. This allegiance drove his participation in Laxus's coup attempt. During the battle, he employed his magic to trap guild members in combat-centric enchantments and erected barriers restricting movement by age or status. Ordered to kill guildmates like Cana Alberona and Juvia Lockser, he initially complied out of devotion to Laxus but later expressed regret. After the coup failed and Laxus was expelled, Fried shaved his head in atonement (though his hair later regrew). This marked a shift, leading to greater involvement with Fairy Tail and reconciliation with former adversaries like Mirajane Strauss, whom he acknowledged as superior in demonic power after their fight.
His primary magic is Letter Magic, specializing in Jutsu Shiki and Dark Écriture. Jutsu Shiki creates rule-based enchantments or barriers enforcing absolute compliance; these require preparation and can be negated by deciphering their runes. He deployed them extensively during the Battle of Fairy Tail, creating oxygen-depleting barriers and arenas enforcing one-on-one duels. Dark Écriture, an Eye Magic variant, involves inscribing runes in the air—typically with his sword or fingers—to produce diverse effects. Offensive spells inflict pain (Pain), suffering (Suffering), or fear (Fear). Defensive or self-enhancement spells include Wings for flight, Absolute Shadow for electricity-manipulating armor, and Darkness—a forbidden technique transforming him into a demonic entity wielding darkness-based attacks like Darkness Flare Bomb. He also employs teleportation via rune dispersion and reflection magic (Reflect). Combat feats include defeating Rustyrose alongside Bickslow, one-shotting Wall Eehto's Machias puppet with Ichiya, and engaging Pre-Elentear Gray Fullbuster.
Personality-wise, he is honor-bound, rule-oriented, and was initially emotionally detached, prioritizing Laxus's directives over guild camaraderie. His stern demeanor included ruthlessly enforcing his enchantments' rules, threatening rule-breakers with "a fate worse than death." Post-coup, he evolved into a more integrated and protective guild member, participating in events like the S-Class Promotion Trial, where he and Bickslow intentionally lost to Cana Alberona to aid her advancement. He exhibits homosexual tendencies, including admiration for male figures like Blue Pegasus members, though his claimed discomfort around minimally clothed women was a strategic ruse. After Fairy Tail's temporary disbandment, he joined Blue Pegasus with the Thunder God Tribe but returned upon the guild's reformation. In the sequel Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest, an alternate version appears as a guitarist in the celebrity guild Fairy Nail.
Appearance-wise, he possesses waist-length light-green hair, often tied in a ponytail with a ribbon, and a beauty mark beneath his left eye. His attire resembles French Enlightenment-era nobility, typically featuring a double-breasted coat (red or black), belts holding his sword, a cravat, and buttoned boots. His brief buzz cut post-coup reduced his popularity in in-universe polls like Sorcerer Magazine's romantic rankings.
