Description
Mavis Vermillion founded the Fairy Tail guild alongside Yuri Dreyar, Precht Gaebolg, and Warrod Sequen, serving as its first guild master. Born on Sirius Island, she was orphaned at six and enslaved by the Red Lizard guild to repay her parents' debts. The guild master, Jezelf, confiscated her only shoes, instilling a lifelong preference for bare feet. An attack by the dark guild Blue Skull seemingly left her the sole survivor with Zera, the guild master's daughter. However, Zera was later revealed as a complex illusion Mavis subconsciously created after witnessing Zera's actual death during the raid. This illusion persisted for seven years while Mavis lived alone on the island.
Her life shifted when treasure hunters Yuri, Precht, and Warrod arrived seeking the stolen sacred relic, the Sirius Orb. Forming an alliance, Mavis journeyed with them to Magnolia to confront Blue Skull. During this mission, she encountered the dark wizard Zeref, cursed by Ankhseram Black Magic. Unaware of his identity, she empathized with his isolation. Zeref taught her the prototype spell "Law." Mavis later used this spell to save Yuri from possession by the corrupted Sirius Orb. This act permanently halted her physical aging around age thirteen and inadvertently triggered the same Ankhseram curse afflicting Zeref, causing involuntary death to those she deeply cares about. The curse manifested soon after when she inadvertently caused the death of Rita, Yuri's wife, shortly after their son Makarov's birth. Horrified, Mavis fled into seclusion.
Years later, Mavis reunited with Zeref. Sharing their anguish over the curse, mutual affection developed. A kiss activated the curse's lethal contradiction—love leading to death—resulting in Mavis's physical demise. Precht preserved her body within a lacrima crystal, creating the infinite magical energy source known as Fairy Heart. Her consciousness endured as an ethereal projection visible and audible only to Fairy Tail guild members. In this form, she continued guiding the guild, notably aiding during crises like the Grimoire Heart invasion by granting Cana Alberona access to Fairy Glitter and protecting the guild from Acnologia with Fairy Sphere, which suspended everyone on Sirius Island in stasis for seven years.
