TV-Series
Description
Born on Christmas night in 1926, Bakabon's father, known as Papa, displayed extraordinary intelligence from infancy. He spoke at birth, understood economic newspapers, and engineered inventions by two months old. However, a childhood sneeze ejected a critical brain component, permanently destroying his genius intellect and leaving him notably foolish. He grew up in Kikuchi City, Kumamoto Prefecture, graduated from Shichijo Junior High School, and moved to Tokyo. There he attended Bakada High School and later Bakada University, studying philosophy and graduating top of his class.

Papa is short, with deep forehead wrinkles and a thin mustache often confused for nose hair. He consistently wears a hachimaki headband, a haramaki belly-band, a long-sleeved shirt, blue pants (lavender in early anime), and sandals. His physical design evolved over the series, shifting from an oblong head shape to a more refined appearance later.

His personality exhibits a profound lack of common sense and ethical judgment, frequently causing chaos. He possesses childish stubbornness, refusing to abandon absurd ideas once conceived. Despite this, he sometimes stumbles into unconventional solutions for others. He is fiercely dedicated to his family, caring for his wife and children amid his antics. His speech is distinctive, often ending sentences with "na no da" and using catchphrases like "Kore de ii noda!", "Tarirariran," and the greeting "Konyanachiwa".

His relationship with his wife began when he gave her a bouquet of pampas grass; intrigued by his persistent foolishness, she agreed to a date. Their marriage followed a misunderstanding where he accused her of an affair with a vagrant, leading her to propose. Professionally, Papa is perpetually unemployed, embodying a "wandering vagabond." Brief employment attempts—as a shoe salesman (where he ate the merchandise), portrait painter, soba shop owner, and chili pepper taste-tester—inevitably ended in dismissal, resignation, or business ruin.

His interests include running, "cat skating" (tying cats to his feet as skates), haiku composition, skiing, and swimming. He possesses unique abilities like speaking octopus and kappa languages, though his violin playing induces nausea. Favorite foods are stir-fried liver with leeks (rebanira), watermelon, and octopus; he despises chikuwabu.

Across adaptations, including the 2018 *Late Night! The Genius Bakabon*, Papa's core traits remain consistent. This version modernizes his setting but retains his unemployment, iconic attire, and catchphrases, incorporating meta-humor and societal satire. He also features extensively in Fujio Akatsuka's "Star System," appearing in over 40 other works like *Extraordinary Ataro*, *Osomatsu-kun*, and *The Great Stupid Detective Kogoro Hakuchi*, often as a chaotic supporting character.
