Description
Kozue Matsumoto, a Japanese high school student, lives as Baki Hanma's neighbor and classmate, with her mother Kinuyo Matsumoto serving as his landlady. Her father perished fighting in the Underground Arena. Initially quiet and shy, she masks her concern for Baki when questioned, persistently opposing his involvement in violent underground fights. Her perspective shifts after visiting the grave of Baki's mother, Emi Akezawa, where she comprehends his motivations.
Physically, Kozue stands approximately 160 cm tall with brown eyes, brown hair, and an average build. Her hairstyle evolves throughout the series—beginning with braids and a fringe, later shifting to ponytails or loose hair. She commonly wears her school uniform or casual clothing.
Their relationship deepens across key events: During the Maximum Tournament, Baki reveals his secret life by taking her to the Underground Arena. Witnessing the brutality, she confronts him about its senselessness but gradually accepts his dedication. They share their first kiss in a corridor before Baki battles Jack Hanma, and later become intimate before his fight against Ryuukou Yanagi—a moment Baki credits for making him a "full man."
Kozue exhibits unexpected assertiveness, confronting Kaoru Hanayama when he suggests Baki seek sexual experiences elsewhere, defending their commitment and criticizing fighters' dismissal of their partners. She attempts to intervene during Baki's fight with Yanagi despite the danger, and later interrupts Baki's clash with his father Yuujirou Hanma, scolding them for prolonging the conflict.
External challenges arise when Mohammad Alai Jr. develops feelings for her. Though acknowledging some affection for him, she rejects his advances, choosing Baki and likening Alai Jr. to a child needing consolation after defeat. Yuujirou explicitly approves of Kozue, declaring her "the best woman in the world"—particularly after her tears neutralize poison Yanagi inflicted on Baki.
In later storylines, Kozue appears sporadically: walking Baki to school post-battle with Pickle, and reminiscing about Alai Jr. She lacks combat skills and initially struggles to grasp the fighters' world, though her tolerance grows after witnessing events like the Raitai tournament. Her background includes an anime-exclusive kidnapping by school thugs, resolved by Baki's intervention. During a date with Baki, an attack by convict Spec occurs, thwarted unknowingly by Hanayama.
