Description
Hattori Hanzō leads the Iga ninja clan for the Tokugawa shogunate, specializing in assassination and covert operations. His wife, Kaede, is a Koga ninja; their marriage ended the feud between their clans. They have two sons, Shinzo and Kanzo. The possession of Shinzo's body by Shiro Tokisada Amakusa becomes a driving force for Hanzō during the first Samurai Shodown tournament. He recovers Shinzo's body, but the soul remains trapped in the demon world.
Hanzō later accepts orders to investigate and eliminate a demon massacring samurai, suspecting an old acquaintance. He receives confidential shogunate orders to destroy the Dark Castle, source of global calamities. His quest to reclaim Shinzo's soul takes him into the demon world with Kaede and Kanzo, resulting in Kaede's sacrificial death to reunite Shinzo's soul with his body. Despite this loss, Hanzō continues serving the Tokugawa alongside his sons.
Decades prior to Samurai Shodown: Warriors Rage, Hanzō defeats Oboro in a duel, forcing Oboro's clan exile. In Samurai Shodown 64, he investigates abductions of unborn children and uncovers a puppet master manipulating clan leaders. Earlier, during Samurai Shodown V, he executed a traitor linked to Yoshitora Tokugawa's father.
Hanzō shares a decades-long friendship with Jubei Yagyu, rooted in mutual Tokugawa service. He exhibits a stern and condescending personality, often laughing at adversaries with superiority. He actively seeks formidable opponents and believes his destiny is to die in combat.
His combat abilities encompass traditional ninja skills: stealth, swimming, and climbing. He employs specialized techniques like shuriken proficiency, pyrotechnic attacks including ground fire waves and flash bombs, and bone-breaking koppojutsu grappling. He also uses supernatural tactics: short-distance teleportation, invisibility (sometimes triggered by flash bombs), and creating illusory duplicates to mislead foes. He possesses an affinity for fire, contrasting Galford's lightning abilities.
Across missions, Hanzō demonstrates strategic versatility, shifting between mystical ninjutsu and physical combat like aerial kicks and grapples. His resilience endures through personal tragedies and relentless service to the Tokugawa shogunate.
