Description
Galford D. Weller, often called simply Galford, is an American ninja who travels with his loyal husky, Poppy, and occasionally her puppies. Born in San Francisco on December 22, 1768, his childhood was marked by the loss of his father, a sheriff known for his just and kind nature, who was killed by a criminal while protecting him. With his final words, his father urged Galford to "become strong," a wish the boy swore to fulfill. He kept the bullet that ended his father’s life and later embedded it into his signature weapon, the Justice Blade—a ninjato also engraved with the names of his family.
After his father’s death, Galford left home to work as a sailor. His travels exposed him to tales of Japanese ninja, their heroism and mysticism captivating his imagination. This fascination drew him to Japan, where he underwent rigorous training in the Koga ninja arts under Ayame, wife of Hanzo Hattori’s master. Completing his training, he adopted the mantle of a self-styled "ninja of justice," dedicating his life to upholding good and fighting evil.
Galford’s personality is marked by optimism, cheerfulness, and a powerful sense of justice, making him one of the more lighthearted ninja in his world. He displays strong sportsmanship but can be decisive and lethal when the greater good demands it. He carries regret for leaving his mother and sisters, feeling he abandoned his duty as the "man of the house," yet believes he cannot rest until justice is achieved.
He holds romantic feelings for Nakoruru, the Ainu princess, a recurring element in his story. His ending in Samurai Shodown VI suggests he may release these pursuits to focus on his battle against evil, though other media indicate Nakoruru retains fondness for him.
In combat, Galford excels in traditional ninja arts such as stealth, swimming, and climbing. His unique techniques include wielding kunai, employing electrokinesis to electrify his strikes, short-range teleportation, and creating mirror images with Poppy to assail foes from multiple angles. His fighting style evolves across appearances: his Shura form emphasizes swift hit-and-run tactics alongside Poppy, while his Rasetsu form focuses on grappling and close-range combat.
Galford’s pursuit of justice often intertwines with personal motives, as seen in Samurai Shodown Sen, where he learns the whereabouts of his father’s killer and pursues vengeance. In that game’s ending, he observes his family home from afar and witnesses his mother happy with a new companion, granting him peace to continue his life as a ninja.
He has appeared in various games, mobile titles, and cameos. Plans included him joining a "Samurai Team" with Haohmaru and Nakoruru in The King of Fighters '95 and '96, though time constraints prevented this realization.
The Justice Blade remains central to Galford’s identity, symbolizing his commitment to justice and honoring his family. His catchphrases often reflect this dedication, such as declaring the path of the sword as "a way to realize justice in the fight against evil."
