Description
Shiranui Gen'an hails from the Shiranui clan, practitioners of the "way of darkness" bearing demonic ancestry. Born March 25, 1762, on Kikoku Island, he possesses green skin, a pronounced underbite, clawed hands, stands 150 cm (4'9") tall, and weighs roughly 67 kg (148 lbs). His primary weapon, the harpoon-like claw Azami, connects to a hidden chain for extending and retracting attacks. Gen'an exhibits supreme confidence, often proclaiming himself a ruler of demons or king despite serving stronger entities. This bluster masks a light-hearted nature and profound devotion to his family: wife Azami, daughter Zakuro, and sons Mukuro and Hedora. He cherishes their "sinister smiles" and prioritizes "evil respites" with them, balancing familial bonds with his clan's dark path. Dislikes include the discoloration of his skin during anger and his "sudden and remarkable loss of hair." His combat abilities feature supernatural techniques: expelling poisonous gas via ingested potions, executing a fiery roll attack wreathed in energy, manipulating his claw for grappling or pulling foes, shedding his skin as an evasive decoy, and extracting opponents' medulla oblongata—a technique he considers his specialty. Initially appearing in *Samurai Shodown* (1786) and *Samurai Shodown II* (1787), Gen'an sought to enhance his malevolent power by killing indiscriminately across Japan to usurp Amakusa's demonic authority. After an unknown female ninja (speculated as Ayame) killed him, his soul was revived by Mizuki, leader of the Demon World, who offered a second life in exchange for servitude. Gen'an pledged loyalty but secretly plotted to overthrow Mizuki and seize the Demon World. His personal ending in *Samurai Shodown II* diverges, showing Azami persuading him to abandon his ambitions for familial peace. An unused developer backstory proposed his clan historically defeated extraterrestrial invaders, incorporating alien bones into his cauldron. Within *Samurai Shodown: The Motion Picture*, Gen'an serves Amakusa Shiro Tokisada during her campaign to resurrect the dark god Ambrosia. Tasked by Amakusa with eliminating reincarnated adversaries, he confronts ninja Galford D. Weller to delay pursuit of Haohmaru. Later, after Haohmaru and Charlotte Christine de Colde escape entrapment, Gen'an locates them at a village refuge. Following Charlotte's spiritual intervention awakening Haohmaru's memories, Gen'an attacks but is swiftly defeated by the empowered warrior. He shares no biological relation with Mai Shiranui of the *Fatal Fury* series. His prized possession, rumored within his clan as "the bones of my demon ancestor" from a lineage of slain heroes, is factually a pteranodon skull.
