Born from stone in a mystical realm, Alakazam (Son Goku) first proves his courage by plunging into a treacherous waterfall. This act wins the monkeys' trust, and they crown him king. Leadership swiftly fuels arrogance, leading to rude, dictatorial rule. Discovering humans' existence, he dismisses them as inferior despite their noted intelligence. Craving greater power, he seeks the hermit Subhuti, deceiving or forcing the sage into teaching him potent magic. Subhuti reluctantly complies, warning of future unhappiness. Armed with formidable transformation and combat abilities, Alakazam grows reckless and prideful. He ascends to the heavens, stealing celestial peaches and overpowering formidable foes like General Kinsei. His defiance peaks in a challenge against Buddha, who defeats him. Punished for his hubris, he is imprisoned beneath the Five Elements Mountain. During his long confinement, the monkey Rin-Rin remains loyally by his side, providing care. Isolation and hardship erode his arrogance, fostering emerging humility. His release is contingent: he must aid the monk Genjo Sanzo on a pilgrimage to Tianzhu to retrieve sacred scriptures. Alakazam accepts under compulsion, bound by a magical headband Sanzo places on him; it tightens painfully to enforce obedience. The pilgrimage tests his shifting nature through encounters with adversaries like the pig-man Cho Hakkai and the ogre Sa Gojō. Strategy and cooperation replace brute force.
