Originally named Zhu Bajie, Chohakkai is a pig-like humanoid. His story begins with an attempt to forcibly marry a human daughter, revealing his aggression. Alakazam thwarts this by disguising himself as the bride, exposing the deception and provoking a fight. Chohakkai flees to his home, pursued by Alakazam. There, his half-brothers Ginkaku and Kinkaku (Herman and Vermin McSnarles in English) aid him, using a magical gourd against Alakazam. When the gourd trap fails and ensnares his brothers instead, Chohakkai confronts Alakazam alone. He is spared due to Rin-Rin's intervention, prompting Alakazam's compassion. This marks a turning point, leading Chohakkai to join Alakazam and Prince Amat (Genjo Sanzo) on their pilgrimage. The group later expands when the ogre Sa Gojō (Max Lulipopo) joins after being defeated by Alakazam. During the journey, Chohakkai displays gluttony and prioritizes personal comfort, constantly fretting about missed meals even in peril. He offers comic relief through these flaws and his frequent cowardice, notably during an attack by the imp Shoryu (Filo Fester) in the desert. In that encounter, his panic causes the loss of the group's food supplies while Sanzo is captured, underscoring his unreliability under pressure. However, shared adversity fosters his gradual development of loyalty and courage. A crucial challenge arises at the Flaming Mountains, ruled by the demon Gyū-Maō (King Gruesome). To bypass the volcanic barrier, Alakazam and Chohakkai disguise themselves as Gyū-Maō to steal the magical Basho-Sen fan from his wife, Ratsunyō (Queen Gruesome). Their ruse fails; Chohakkai is captured while Alakazam escapes with the fan. Facing execution alongside Sanzo by Gyū-Maō, Chohakkai is rescued by Alakazam, Gojō, and a now-redeemed Shoryu. In the ensuing battle against Gyū-Maō's demons, Chohakkai fights actively. He uses the recovered Basho-Sen fan to freeze Ratsunyō and solidify the lava, decisively contributing to the group's victory, demonstrating his growth from a self-serving antagonist to a capable, dependable ally. His journey concludes with the pilgrimage reaching Tianzhu (India). He witnesses Buddha (King Amo) grant the sacred sutra to Prince Amat and remove Alakazam's headband. Chohakkai returns to China with the group, having learned humility and cooperation through his experiences.
