Tolby, alternately called Toby or Torby, is a human male featured in the 1983 animated film. As the older brother of Cheri, he is drawn into the service of the antagonist, Lord Kuruku, a formidable magician. A stoic and conflicted figure, Tolby acts as Kuruku’s apprentice under a pact to master magic in exchange for executing the sorcerer’s commands. Tasked with wielding a mystical flute, he transforms living beings into zombified “Living Puppets,” compelled to build Kuruku’s fortress on Nightmare Island.
Tolby’s blond hair flares outward, his cold blue eyes mirroring the icy precision of his blue magician attire. His reserved manner masks an internal battle between duty to Kuruku and protective instincts toward Cheri. Though compliant with the magician’s orders, he covertly shields his sister from danger, exposing a buried loyalty to family. This tension peaks when he deflects a lethal spell meant for Cheri, sacrificing himself to become a puppet.
His narrative pivots on defiance against Kuruku’s tyranny. Confronted by the devastation he enabled—including harm to his sister and community—Tolby allies with Kuruku’s foes, prioritizing Cheri’s safety over blind allegiance. This redemption arc, fueled by sibling devotion, sees him survive Kuruku’s downfall, freed from magical enslavement.
Exclusive to the 1983 film, Tolby’s story remains unexpanded in the original manga or other official works, with his background and choices anchored solely to the movie’s events.
