Torby is Cheri's older brother who returns home after a prolonged absence, now apprenticed to the magician Kuruku. His primary motivation involves advancing Kuruku's plan to transform living creatures into mindless "Living Puppets," luring victims to Nightmare Island. Torby ultimately seeks to master sufficient magic to overthrow Kuruku himself.
This allegiance creates deep conflict with his sister, as Torby repeatedly fails to protect Cheri from Kuruku's influence despite their familial bond. His actions directly cause the transformation of their parents and neighbors into Living Puppets, underscoring the personal cost of his choices.
Torby recruits Melvin Magnificat, a forest cat hostile to Unico, to assist Kuruku's goals. His collaboration stems from a desire for power and knowledge, though underlying loyalty to family surfaces through moments of hesitation about Cheri's safety.
Following Kuruku's defeat and reversion to an inanimate puppet, Torby survives, forced to confront irreversible consequences including the loss of his family and his role in their suffering.
