Description
Wildcat, identified as Yamaneko in Japanese media, is an original character created solely for the animated feature *Unico in the Island of Magic* and absent from Osamu Tezuka's source manga. He is an orange striped cat with plump features and notably small eyes. His distinctive headphones feature a bird (tweeter) on one side and a frog (woofer) on the other; after aligning with Toby, he adds a red cape to his attire.
Initially, Wildcat acts as a self-proclaimed authority within Unico's arrival forest. Exhibiting conceit and territorial behavior, he bullies Unico upon their first meeting. He perceives other cats pointing out Unico's presence as a challenge to his dominance, prompting Wildcat and his companions to chase Unico away.
Wildcat's role shifts upon encountering Toby, who is playing a flute in the forest. He allies with Toby, becoming his assistant in service of Lord Kuruku's objectives. In this capacity, Wildcat participates in transforming living creatures and humans into zombie-like "Living Puppets." His collaboration directly supports Kuruku's plan to amass these enslaved laborers for the island castle. While not inherently evil, Wildcat's actions as a henchman significantly contribute to the film's conflict.
This character appears exclusively within the 1983 film, with no documented presence in other official *Unico* media including prior or subsequent films, OVAs, spin-offs, or the original manga. His narrative begins and concludes within this single cinematic work.
