Description
Andō Shōzan is an elderly philosopher and scholar, exiled to Ezo for his foreign language studies and suspicious activities in Nagasaki. He possesses expertise in the English language and offers shelter to the injured protagonist, Jiro. Applying his linguistic skills, Andō deciphers cryptic notes left by Jiro's father, which contain clues to Captain Kidd's treasure. This discovery leads him to instruct Jiro to travel to America and continue the quest.
His philosophical lineage traces back to his grandfather, Andō Shōeki, a mid-Edo Period ideologist and doctor who criticized unproductive ruling classes and rejected Shinto, Confucianism, and Buddhism. During Jiro's stay, Andō resides with an Ainu caretaker named Chiomapp. His assistance makes him a target for Tenkai's forces. Three assassins, known as the Matsumae Three or Three Demonic Ninjas, attack Andō and Jiro. Andō is killed during the confrontation. Following his death, Chiomapp takes her own life when confronted by Tenkai, refusing to reveal Jiro's whereabouts.
