Description
Merrill Yanagawa, alias Benten, is an albino male with porcelain skin, crimson eyes, and flowing white or pale blue hair styled like a kabuki performer. He stands 178 cm tall, weighs 58 kg, and presents with deliberate androgyny—wearing red lipstick, nail polish, and pierced earrings—which invites ridicule from colleague Sengoku. A native of Elcion D-6 on Earth, Benten serves a 295-year orbital prison sentence for murder, assault, forgery, aviation/space law violations, embezzlement, and property destruction. His parole probability is 0.008%. To reduce his term, he becomes a Cyber Police officer under Chief Hasegawa’s command, restrained by an explosive collar.

Specializing in silent weapons and acrobatic combat, Benten wields a monowire hidden in his left-hand ring, slicing precisely through steel and flesh. His reflexes dodge laser fire, and his marksmanship strikes moving targets in harsh sunlight. He also breaks locks and practices astrology, interpreting stellar patterns as dire omens. Investigations leverage his underworld connections, extracting information through intimidation.

Assigned to investigate three geneticists’ murders linked to Shūzō Saionji’s immortality virus—which induces psychic powers and vampirism by halting blood production—Benten encounters Remi Masuda, a cryogenically preserved test subject turned vampire seeking vengeance. In a park, they debate starlight and fate, revealing his philosophical side. Confronting Saionji after the scientist gains near-invincibility from the virus, Benten fails to kill him via explosive decompression due to teleportation and regeneration. He ultimately injects Saionji with an antidote from colleague Gogol, triggering rapid aging and death. Remi returns to cryosleep per her request.

Professionally focused during missions, Benten voices cynicism and vulgarity, exemplified by his quip: "You wouldn’t recognize a goddamn vampire if one jumped up and bit you on the end of your fucking dick." He uses the masculine pronoun "ore" and remains detached amid Sengoku’s mockery. No familial ties or personal history beyond his criminal record exist. His character development occurs solely within the OVA series, with no expansion in spin-off novels or the unrelated video game storyline.
