Description
Dr. Josef Merekes, a German scientist of Jewish descent, heads the cyborg division within the organization Talon. A recognized authority in cybernetic engineering, he personally transforms individuals into cybernetically enhanced weapons—including Sonnet Barge and Shuichi Torigai, codenamed Bird. His expertise proves instrumental to Talon’s plans for developing esper-cyborg hybrids to achieve global domination.
Initially cool-headed and methodical, Merekes oversees Sonnet’s mission to investigate and eliminate Komatsuzaki Lan, whom Talon identifies as the powerful esper Crimson Fang. He demonstrates ruthless pragmatism by ordering Sonnet to kill a school nurse discovering her enhancements and authorizing violent tactics to capture Lan for experimentation. Talon’s objectives involve extracting Lan’s ovum to create cloned esper soldiers, procedures Merekes facilitates at their laboratory.
A shift occurs as Merekes develops genuine paternal affection for Sonnet, whom he rescued from a traumatic past. This attachment conflicts with his loyalty to Talon. He increasingly questions his actions’ morality, particularly when Sonnet resists orders due to her growing humanity. His protective instincts toward Sonnet compromise his position within Talon, leading to his downfall. Talon’s disrupted operations leave his fate uncertain.
