Description
Motro is the chief engineer of the Tiger Moth, an airship commanded by the pirate captain Dola, his sharp-tongued wife. A stout, bald figure sporting a bushy brown mustache and round tinted glasses that conceal his eyes, his appearance channels the eccentric mechanics of Miyazaki’s universe—evoking characters like *Spirited Away*’s Kamajī while mirroring the aesthetic of foes from early *Lupin III* episodes.
Though gruffly professional aboard the Tiger Moth, Motro shares a playful rapport with Dola and her crew. He begrudgingly partners with Pazu during critical repairs, impressed by the boy’s ingenuity, and later ribs Dola for her uncharacteristic softness toward Sheeta and Pazu. When their airship is destroyed during the battle for Laputa, Motro mourns the vessel like a fallen comrade, only for Dola to brusquely dismiss his grief, vowing to secure a replacement.
Post-conflict, he joins the crew in farewells to Sheeta and Pazu before sailing toward new escapades. Beyond the film, Motro’s design—bald head, mustache, and obscured eyes—has sparked speculation as a visual precursor to *Sonic the Hedgehog*’s Dr. Robotnik, a theory bolstered by voice actor Jim Cummings’ later portrayal of both characters in English dubs.
