Description
Koinosuke, a 300-year-old samurai, served as loyal attendant to the legendary swordsman Yagyu Jubei. Entrusted by Jubei himself after the swordsman's death, Koinosuke bears the duty of finding Jubei's rightful successor. This successor must inherit Jubei's spirit and combat abilities through the "Lovely Eyepatch," a distinctive heart-shaped eyepatch Jubei crafted. Jubei's final description of his reincarnation as "a plump, bouncy bon bon" sends Koinosuke searching across centuries.
His quest leads him to modern-day schoolgirl Jiyu Nanohana, whom he believes fits the description and is Jubei's destined heir. Koinosuke persistently approaches Jiyu, urging her to accept the eyepatch and her inherited role despite her initial skepticism and reluctance. Once she begins using the eyepatch, he remains dedicated to guiding and supporting her as she confronts members of the rival Ryujoji clan, who seek to defeat the Yagyu successor to settle a centuries-old familial grudge.
Koinosuke exhibits an eccentric and scatterbrained personality, often appearing in unexpected situations to fulfill his duties. Despite his centuries of existence, his physical appearance remains that of a young man. His commitment extends beyond the initial series; he later reappears in a sequel season, still safeguarding the Lovely Eyepatch and interacting with Jiyu when new adversaries emerge, including a transfer student linked to the ongoing conflicts. His character provides comic relief through exaggerated behavior while serving as a steadfast link to the historical legacy of the Yagyu lineage, balancing absurdity with moments of earnest devotion to his mission.
