Tahomaru, second son of Lord Kagemitsu Daigo and Lady Nui no Kata, was born one year after his elder brother Hyakkimaru's ill-fated birth. Raised amidst luxury as the designated heir to the Daigo domain, he was groomed for leadership yet received little affection from his mother, perpetually consumed by guilt over abandoning Hyakkimaru. This childhood neglect fostered deep-seated jealousy and a desperate need for parental validation, driving him to undertake dangerous feats for their attention. Initially a headstrong yet principled adolescent, Tahomaru demonstrated genuine concern for his subjects' welfare, often risking his life defending them. He possessed strong leadership qualities and swordsmanship skills, though harbored arrogance, proclaiming himself the "best swordsman in the land." His loyal retainers, Mutsu and Hyogo, served as companions and moral anchors. Discovering Hyakkimaru's existence and the truth behind his father's demonic pact fundamentally altered Tahomaru's path. Though initially sympathetic to his brother's plight, he ultimately prioritized his land's prosperity over Hyakkimaru's quest to reclaim his body. This decision stemmed partly from duty but also from resentment towards Hyakkimaru, viewed as the source of his mother's emotional absence and a threat to his birthright. His rivalry intensified after a humiliating defeat by Hyakkimaru cost him his right eye. Embittered and scarred, Tahomaru adopted a colder, more ruthless personality, training relentlessly for a rematch. He eliminated perceived threats, including civilians, without remorse, mirroring his father's harsh methods. As conflict escalated and his retainers died protecting him, Tahomaru's desperation peaked. To gain the power necessary to defeat Hyakkimaru and safeguard his domain, he forged a pact with the Twelfth Demon, Asura. This pact transformed him into a demonic entity, granting him stolen body parts of Hyakkimaru, including his eyes, at the cost of his own humanity. In their final confrontation, Hyakkimaru, recognizing their shared pain and humanity, chose to spare Tahomaru despite his demonic state. This act of empathy prompted Tahomaru to acknowledge his defeat and underlying motivations—his lifelong jealousy and need for his mother's love, not merely duty to his land. In redemption, he resisted Asura's control, returning Hyakkimaru's eyes and verbally accepting him as his brother. Mortally wounded, Tahomaru was finally acknowledged by his mother, Lady Nui, who apologized for her neglect before they perished together in the burning castle.
