Description
Joseph Joestar, grandson of Jonathan Joestar, is the protagonist of the second story arc. Born September 27, 1920, he was raised in New York by his grandmother Erina Pendleton and family friend Robert E. O. Speedwagon following his parents' deaths. Joseph possesses a natural aptitude for Hamon (Ripple) energy manipulation, further honed under Lisa Lisa's training during his conflict with the ancient Pillar Men. His fighting style emphasizes cunning over brute strength, frequently employing psychological tactics and an uncanny ability to predict opponents' exact words and actions, encapsulated in his signature phrase anticipating their "next line." He lost his left hand battling Kars, later receiving a functional mechanical prosthetic from associates of Rudol von Stroheim.

In later years, Joseph manifests the Stand Hermit Purple, representing the Hermit tarot card. This ability manifests as purple, thorn-covered vines extending from his hands, capable of binding targets and transmitting Ripple energy. Its primary function is divination: breaking cameras generates psychic photographs revealing subjects' current situations, while televisions display real-time visuals of distant locations or objects. Hermit Purple can also create dust maps marking desired items and analyze mechanical tampering. The effectiveness of these divinations increases with proximity to the target.

Joseph participates in the mission to defeat DIO in Egypt to save his daughter Holly Kujo. During this journey, his Stand abilities and strategic mind prove vital, such as when he outwits Terence T. D'Arby by secretly manipulating a video game with Hermit Purple while feigning incompetence. Though physically diminished by age and reduced Hamon practice, Joseph survives DIO's attack after a blood transfusion from the vampire's remains revives him.

In his final appearance, Joseph meets his illegitimate son Josuke Higashikata in Morioh and adopts an invisible infant, Shizuka Joestar. Now using a cane and suffering from senility, he demonstrates Hermit Purple's continued utility by slitting his wrist to create a blood trail that locates Shizuka when she disappears in a lake.

Magician's Red is the Stand of Muhammad Avdol, Joseph's Egyptian ally. Representing the Magician tarot card, it appears as a muscular humanoid with a phoenix-like avian head, feathered legs often wreathed in flames, clawed hands with dark bracelets, and later Arabian-style boots. Its design draws inspiration from the renegade god Horus in Enki Bilal's Nikopol Trilogy, with the bird-like features intended to distinguish hero silhouettes.

Avdol generates and manipulates extreme heat and flames that ignore natural laws, evaporating metal projectiles and melting steel rails instantly. Techniques include Cross Fire Hurricane (launching flaming ankh projectiles from its mouth), Cross Fire Hurricane Special (splitting ankhs for wider coverage), and Red Bind (constricting opponents with fire ropes that suffocate by burning oxygen). Its Life Detector creates a cruciform heat radar detecting biological signatures within 15 meters, though it fails against interdimensional beings like Vanilla Ice. Magician's Red also exhibits significant physical strength, shattering armored Stands with kicks enhanced by fire-wrapped limbs.

Avdol first allies with Joseph in Egypt, having barely escaped DIO months earlier. He aids Joseph in assessing Jotaro Kujo's Stand awakening and names Star Platinum after the tarot card. During the crusade, Avdol sacrifices himself twice for Jean Pierre Polnareff and Iggy: first faking death against Hol Horse and J. Geil (surviving with a forehead graze), then perishing while shielding them from Vanilla Ice's Stand, Cream. His personality balances strategic seriousness with occasional panic and boisterous humor, often performing a thumbs-up gesture while declaring "Yes, I am!".
