Description
Thorfinn Thordarson, born in Iceland's winter of 996, was the son of former Jomsviking commander Thors Snorresson and Helga. He spent his childhood unaware of his father's past in a remote village, exhibiting a cheerful and adventurous spirit. His early days involved playful mock battles with other children, though he frequently lost. Tales of distant lands like Vinland, recounted by Leif Ericson, ignited his imagination and a yearning for exploration.

At age six, Thorfinn stowed away on his father's ship. This act irrevocably altered his life when he witnessed Thors killed by the mercenary Askeladd during a duel, despite Thors having won. Thors sacrificed himself after Askeladd's men threatened Thorfinn, accepting death without resistance. This event shattered Thorfinn's worldview. Thors' final words – "You don’t have any enemies, no one has any enemies, there’s no one who it’s okay to hurt" – were a philosophy Thorfinn initially rejected.

Consumed by vengeance, Thorfinn joined Askeladd's band, spending eleven years as a warrior in England. He served Askeladd in exchange for regular duels, believing killing him in fair combat would honor his father. During this time, Thorfinn became a highly skilled yet emotionally detached fighter, specializing in reconnaissance and knife combat. He grew numb to violence, ignoring massacres and assaults committed by the band. While he occasionally allowed potential victims to escape, he displayed no deeper empathy. His appearance became unkempt, marked by old clothes and a slight build that concealed his strength; multiple characters remarked on his short stature.

Thorfinn's obsession isolated him. He refused social interaction and ignored chances to return home, even as his mother fell ill. His defining flaws were an uncontrollable temper and impulsiveness, which Askeladd exploited during their duels by provoking him with insults about Thors. This manipulation ensured Thorfinn's continued defeat and service. Despite occasional hallucinations of his father questioning his path, Thorfinn remained fixated on revenge.

Askeladd's death at Prince Canute's hands in 1015 destroyed Thorfinn's purpose. In a rage, he attacked Canute and was subsequently enslaved as punishment. Enslaved on Ketil’s farm in Denmark, Thorfinn became emotionally catatonic—apathetic, melancholic, and unwilling to defend himself against abuse. This period left him with physical scars, including the loss of part of his left ear when he refused to react to intimidation by Ketil's guest, Fox.

Thorfinn's transformation began through friendship with fellow slave Einar and guidance from the elderly Sverkel. He gradually regained his will to live, embracing his father's pacifist ideals. After earning freedom in 1018, he vowed to atone for his past violence by establishing a peaceful settlement in Vinland, free from slavery and warfare. This new purpose required funds, leading him and Einar to undertake a trading expedition to Greece.

On his journey toward pacifism, Thorfinn struggled with practical challenges. He avoided violence whenever possible, attempting to resolve conflicts through dialogue, though this approach sometimes failed. His social skills remained underdeveloped, exemplified by his misunderstanding of female physiology when asking Gudrid to breastfeed an adopted child. He confronted his past sins directly upon meeting Hild, whose family he had massacred under Askeladd. Accepting her right to kill him, he carried the burden of his actions while continuing his nonviolent path.

Thorfinn's physical appearance reflected his evolution. His body bore numerous blade scars, with significant facial injuries added during adulthood: a slash across his right cheek from Gardar in 1018 and additional damage to his left ear from Garm in 1019. By 1021, he had a scar across his nose bridge and slicked-back hair. After securing resources in Greece, he founded Arnheid Village in Vinland, aiming to create a society embodying Thors' ideal that "no one has enemies."
