Description
Mendoza, a Spanish navigator trained by Ferdinand Magellan, successfully piloted ships past the perilous Cape Horn coast three times. During Magellan's circumnavigation voyage, he rescued the infant Esteban from a sinking ship west of the Strait of Magellan, though he could not save Esteban's father. Mendoza took the sun crest from Esteban's medallion, believing their fates were linked.

Initially driven by greed, Mendoza spent over a decade researching the Mysterious Cities of Gold. He orchestrated Esteban's journey to the New World by manipulating the boy's desire to find his father, suggesting the father might have survived despite Mendoza witnessing his disappearance. Mendoza also kidnapped Zia, an Incan girl, due to her ability to read golden quipus that could reveal the cities' locations. Serving as navigator for the Spanish fleet, he was accompanied by the loyal mercenaries Sancho and Pedro, whom he often treated with condescension and cruelty.

During the quest, Mendoza's priorities gradually shifted. While remaining cunning and self-interested, his protective instincts toward Esteban, Zia, and Tao—the last descendant of the Hiva (Mu) Empire—grew stronger. He repeatedly intervened to protect them from antagonists like Commander Gomez, Captain Gaspard, and Governor Pizarro, acknowledging their quest would have failed without his aid. This complex loyalty saw him serve as Esteban's morality pet, with his concern for the children beginning to outweigh his obsession with gold.

In later seasons, Mendoza's character development solidified. He facilitated Esteban's reunion with his father, the High Priest of the Cities of Gold, despite previously withholding this knowledge. His relationship with the children evolved into a consolidated friendship, and he prioritized their safety over personal gain during travels across China and Japan searching for other Cities of Gold. He continued to demonstrate exceptional navigational skills and leadership, remaining wary of adversaries like the alchemist Zares.

Mendoza's full name, Juan Carlos Mendoza, was revealed in the third season. His interactions with Isabella Laguerra, a sword-wielding henchwoman of Zares, introduced a romantic subplot where she eventually fell in love with him, though he initially maintained a rivalry with her.
