Roy Fokker (also spelled Focker or Föcker) was born in late 20th century North America. He cultivated an early passion for aviation, starting his career as a stunt pilot in the flying circus run by Hikaru Ichijyo's father. There, he formed a mentor-protégé bond with Hikaru, becoming his senpai. He later pursued college studies in archaeology and prehistoric civilizations, entering a relationship with his senior, Aries Turner. Following their separation, he left academia to dedicate himself fully to stunt flying before enlisting for the Unification Wars, motivated by the loss of many friends. As a fighter pilot, he earned ace status with over 180 confirmed kills, including a notable engagement where he shot down five enemy aircraft while severely hungover. His combat instructor was D.D. Ivanov. After the Unification Wars, he broke his promise to return to the circus, instead becoming a test pilot for variable fighter development. He worked on the VF-X prototypes and flew the VF-0 Phoenix during covert South Pacific operations aboard the stealth carrier CVN-99 Asuka II. His actions against Anti-UN Forces SV-51s in the Mayan Island incident contributed to refining the VF-1 Valkyrie design. Assigned to the SDF-1 Macross as Skull Squadron commander, he piloted the distinctive black-and-yellow VF-1S Valkyrie. During the ship's maiden voyage on February 6, 2009, he hosted an aerobatic demonstration featuring the Angel Birds squadron. His protégé Hikaru disrupted the event, but Roy later permitted him to examine a Valkyrie cockpit, inadvertently placing Hikaru in combat during the subsequent Zentradi surprise attack. Throughout Space War I, he maintained his reputation as a skilled yet reckless pilot, balancing combat leadership with womanizing and drinking. Despite his playboy persona, he sustained a committed relationship with SDF-1 bridge officer Claudia LaSalle. His mentorship of Hikaru continued during the conflict, providing tactical guidance and life advice while frequently expressing concern for Hikaru's psychological well-being. During a battle against Milia Fallyna's Queadluun-Rau forces, he sustained critical injuries. Refusing medical treatment, he visited Claudia to fulfill their plans for pineapple salad. He played guitar while she cooked before collapsing from internal bleeding and succumbing to his wounds. He received a military burial at sea. The 1984 film "The Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love?" depicts an alternate death: captured by Zentradi forces, he sacrifices himself fighting Quamzin Kravshera to enable Hikaru and Misa Hayase's escape. His legacy endured through the "Roy Focker Prize," awarded annually to exceptional pilots from 2037 onward, with Isamu Alva Dyson being a three-time recipient. Later series like "Macross Frontier" contain narrative homages through Ozma Lee, who shares similar traits and parallels involving pineapple-based foods. The character's name honors aircraft manufacturer Anthony Fokker. His Valkyrie's livery mirrored the F-14 Tomcat's VF-84 Jolly Rogers scheme. Flashback sequences show him flying a Fokker D.VII replica, and he gifted Hikaru a model of the aircraft.
