Roy Fokker (also spelled Focker in some sources) began his aviation career as a prominent aerial stunt performer. He flew Fokker D.VII biplanes for a flying circus run by the father of his future protégé, Hikaru Ichijyo, serving as Hikaru's mentor. When the Unification Wars erupted, he enlisted, transitioning from stunt flying to combat aviation. He achieved over 180 confirmed kills, becoming a decorated ace. Though he promised Hikaru's father to return to the circus after the wars, he chose to remain in the military, explaining to Hikaru the profound understanding gained from flying fighters in combat.
Post-war, his expertise led to selection as a test pilot for advanced variable fighter programs. He trained pilots for the VF-0 Phoenix aboard the stealth carrier CVN-99 Asuka II and participated in early combat evaluations against Anti-U.N. Forces SV-51s over Mayan Island. His leadership solidified his reputation, resulting in a transfer to South Ataria Island as the designated squadron leader for the SDF-1 Macross. He maintained a relationship with Claudia LaSalle, a U.N. Spacy officer met during service, which moved him away from earlier playboy tendencies.
During the SDF-1 Macross's maiden voyage ceremony on February 6, 2009, he provided commentary for an Angel Birds VF-1A Valkyrie aerobatic display. The event was interrupted by Hikaru Ichijyo's unauthorized flight demonstration, featuring a complex boost-to-inverted climb. Despite initial frustration, he permitted Hikaru to examine a parked VF-1D Valkyrie. When Zentradi forces attacked, he scrambled in his VF-1S Valkyrie as Skull Squadron leader. In the ensuing battle, he provided crucial guidance and support to the unexpectedly combat-thrust Hikaru. Throughout Space War I, he commanded Skull Squadron from his VF-1S "Skull One," defending the SDF-1 during its journey. He continued mentoring Hikaru, visiting him in the hospital to boost his spirits.
His combat career ended defending against Zentradi forces during an assault by Queadluun-Rau battle suits piloted by figures identified as Milia Fallyna or Miriya Parina. He sustained severe injuries. Refusing immediate medical attention, he went to Claudia LaSalle's quarters where she was preparing a promised pineapple salad. While waiting, he played guitar but collapsed due to internal bleeding and died shortly after. He received a burial at sea. Different media portray his death: *The Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love?* shows him dying aboard a Zentradi vessel during an escape attempt with Hikaru and Misa Hayase, while another variation depicts him sacrificing himself fighting Quamzin Kravshera.
His legacy persisted. By 2031, the "Roy Focker Prize" was established, awarded to exceptional pilots like Isamu Alva Dyson (consecutive winner 2037-2039). His mentorship profoundly impacted Hikaru Ichijyo, who succeeded him as Skull Squadron leader, inheriting his VF-1S Valkyrie. Physically described with blonde hair and blue or green eyes, his height is listed variably as approximately 6'5" (195cm), 6'1", or 7'1". His personality combined a rough, boastful exterior—evident in claims about flying skills and appreciation for women—with deep loyalty, compassion, and responsibility towards those he cared for, particularly Hikaru and Claudia.
