Henry J. Gloval, born Henryk Jozef Glovalsky to a Russian father and Lithuanian mother, served as a decorated naval officer in the Russian Navy during the Global Civil War. He commanded surface vessels and nuclear submarines like the K-142 Minsk, earning respect from allies and adversaries, including American Admiral Donald Hayes, through his strategic acumen. Gloval played a pivotal international diplomatic role by defying orders to allow global access to the crashed alien battle fortress on Macross Island in 1999. This action facilitated the ceasefire ending the Global Civil War and led to the United Earth Government's formation. Appointed commanding officer of the SDF-1 Macross during its reconstruction, Gloval oversaw its 2009 launch. When Zentraedi forces attacked the ceremony, triggering the ship's automated defenses, he authorized an untested space fold system under overwhelming enemy fire. This accidentally transported the SDF-1 and Macross City to Pluto's orbit, stranding 70,000 civilians aboard. Gloval organized the integration of civilians into the ship's operations, permitting self-governance while maintaining military command. He attached the aircraft carriers Daedalus and Prometheus to the battle fortress and led its arduous journey back to Earth amid constant Zentraedi assaults, including encounters with warlord Khyron. Upon reaching Earth, Gloval confronted the United Earth Government's refusal to admit refugees or provide support. His unauthorized broadcast appealing for sanctuary provoked governmental backlash. During subsequent combat, an ill-fated test of the omni-directional barrier system caused catastrophic collateral damage, destroying a 25-mile radius and nullifying a refugee resettlement agreement. Despite this, he persisted in protecting civilians while coordinating military engagements and peace overtures with Zentraedi commander Breetai. His authorization of the marriage between Zentraedi pilot Milia Fallyna and human ace Maximilian Jenius proved instrumental in fostering alien-human understanding. Following Earth's devastation in the Rain of Death, Gloval was promoted to Admiral and spearheaded reconstruction. He initiated the Gloval Initiative for space colonization, promoted Lisa Hayes to captain the SDF-2, and planned the Pioneer Expedition. Gloval died commanding the SDF-1's bridge during Khyron's final suicide attack, which also destroyed the SDF-2. His legacy includes the Gloval Initiative, the establishment of Monument City's memorial, and the naming of future spacecraft and spaceports in his honor.
