Description
Yami Ma Shō Anubis, also called Shutendouji or the Dark Warlord of Cruelty, began as a human soldier named Sasaki Kujuurou during Japan’s civil wars. Born to a low-ranking samurai family in northern Japan, his name reflected his family’s forest protection duties and his status as a ninetieth son. His harsh early life involved farming, fostering deep filial piety. At fourteen or fifteen, he fought in regional warfare, sustaining fatal injuries against the Date army. His dying bitterness and thirst for power drew Talpa’s influence, transforming him into a Dark Warlord.

Initially serving Talpa’s Evil Dynasty, he displayed ruthlessness, ego, and criticism toward fellow Warlords. His Armor of Cruelty, alternately named Yami or Shikoku/Jet Black Armor, represented spring and drew strength from dark thoughts. Its primary weapon, a kusari-gama (scythe-chain), executed the Ko Rai Sei specialty attack, unleashing red lightning. The armor could engulf areas in absolute darkness, blinding adversaries while granting him sight, and generate extreme cold capable of instantly freezing a waterfall with energy equivalent to hundreds of nuclear bombs. Originally designed to safeguard darkness’s tranquility and guide the dead, it held potential for benevolence when used virtuously.

Repeated defeats by the Ronin Warriors catalyzed his evolution. A battle destroying his helmet revealed his human face, sparking doubt about Talpa’s cause. Meditating under the Ancient One’s guidance, he broke Talpa’s control and pursued redemption. This shift realigned his armor’s purpose toward protection, enabling him to lead lost souls from literal and metaphorical darkness. Despite this, his association with darkness often caused others to perceive him as a demon.

After the Ancient One’s death, he succeeded him as the Ronin Warriors’ guide, adopting monastic robes to atone for his past. His fierce rivalry with Ryo Sanada transformed into a trusted alliance. In the OVA *Legend of the Inferno Armor*, he sacrificed himself to halt Talpa’s resurgence, shielding the warriors with his reclaimed armor during the final conflict and cementing his redemption.

His weaponry included the Kokourou-ken or Kurou Ookami (Black Wolf Sword), styled after a no-dachi. He commanded wolves or wild dogs in battle, reflecting the sword’s spiritual bond with the extinct Japanese black wolf yokai. He frequently employed psychological tactics, such as wearing a Noh Hannya mask to exploit opponents’ emotions.
