OVA
Description
Master Mage Clef reigns as Cephiro's supreme sorcerer, the realm's most potent magic user. Though appearing as a 10-11 year old boy, he is 745 years old, having willed his youthful form. He possesses light purple hair, light blue eyes, and fair skin, typically adorned in elaborate white robes, a diadem featuring aquamarine gems and a central horn, and gold earrings. He wields a tall staff topped with a carved animal figure and two large gemstones (blue and purple), channeling magic through the blue gem.

Born in Cephiro, Clef's early life remains largely undisclosed, though he likely possessed royal or noble lineage. He dedicated centuries to mastering magic, becoming the "Guru," responsible for instructing those with magical potential. His prominent students included Zagato, Lantis, Alcyone, and Princess Emeraude. As Emeraude's tutor and later advisor after she became the Pillar of Cephiro, Clef held significant political influence, effectively governing while Emeraude sustained the world through prayer. He personally appointed Zagato as High Priest and Lantis as Captain of the Royal Guard.

Clef sensed the romantic bond between Emeraude and Zagato but refrained from immediate intervention, questioning Cephiro's reliance on the Pillar's sacrifice. When Emeraude resolved to summon the Magic Knights to end her suffering, Clef vehemently opposed the plan, knowing it required her death. Unable to dissuade her, he accepted the task of guiding the summoned heroes. He relocated the blacksmith Presea and the creature Mokona to the Silence Forest for protection, enchanting the entrance to permit only the Magic Knights' access.

Meeting Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu, Clef initially doubted their suitability due to youth and inexperience, particularly clashing with Umi after she dismissed him as a child. He provided them with self-growing armor, awakened their latent magic, and taught Hikaru her first spell, Flame Arrow. After sending them to Presea via a summoned creature, he confronted his former student Alcyone but was incapacitated; in the anime, Zagato turned him to stone. Despite this, he maintained communication with the Knights through Mokona, remotely instructing Umi and Fuu in water and wind magic during battles. In the manga, he privately acknowledged the Knights' grim purpose—to kill Emeraude—but withheld this truth, a decision that later fueled profound guilt.

Following Emeraude's death and Cephiro's descent into chaos, Clef collaborated with other magicians to erect a protective castle sheltering survivors. When the Magic Knights returned, he apologized for his deception, though they bore no resentment. He informed them of invading nations (Autozam, Chizeta, Fahren) and the absence of a new Pillar. Privately, Umi expressed remorse for her initial rudeness, but Clef redirected blame onto himself for inadequately supporting them. He exhibited growing disillusionment with the Pillar system, pondering whether Cephiro's preservation justified such sacrifices.

As Cephiro deteriorated further, Clef sensed the emergence of the "Road to the Pillar" and witnessed Mokona's revelation as the world's creator. After Hikaru abolished the Pillar system, Clef shifted focus to diplomatic outreach, aiding Autozam's Eagle Vision in recovering from illness and researching solutions for Autozam's environmental decline. He theorized Mokona summoned the Knights to catalyze systemic change in Cephiro. In the anime's second season, he exhaustively supported the Knights' battles against Lady Debonair until magic overuse left him bedridden. He later conversed with Eagle and Hikaru about Pillar candidacy, promising Autozam assistance regardless of the outcome. In a critical act of self-sacrifice, he channeled all his power to fortify the castle against collapse, reassuring Sierra (Presea's sister) he would survive.

The OVA presents an alternate continuity where Clef travels to Earth instead of the Knights being summoned to Cephiro, though specific details of his role remain less defined. Across all media, Clef demonstrates a blend of wisdom, pragmatism, and concealed remorse. His demeanor is typically calm and authoritative, though he exhibits a sharp temper when provoked, often expressed by waving his staff. While characters like Presea, Sierra, and Umi (in the anime) harbor affection for him, he shows no overt interest in romantic relationships, prioritizing Cephiro's stability.
