Dr. Kozaburo Nambu, a Japanese scientist and executive, operates within the International Science Organization and Interpol. Born into wealth from a businessman father owning an airfield and bank, Nambu inherited substantial fortune. After his parents died, he severed family ties, dedicating his entire wealth to funding the Mantle Project and researching the terrorist group Galactor, partly motivated by guilt over separating his childhood friend Kentaro Washio from his family during wartime. Educated at Oxford and Cambridge, Nambu possesses diverse qualifications in space engineering, physics, chemistry, astronomy, medicine, politics, and fundraising. Leading a successful pollution-free energy project propelled his rise within the ISO. He developed the Science Ninja Technique fighting style and created the technology for the Science Ninja Team's Bird Styles, mecha, and weapons. He designed the God Phoenix aircraft, deliberately incorporating a flaw requiring all five members' cooperation for critical functions like Bird Missiles or Firebird mode to foster teamwork. Holding an Interpol executive position allows Nambu to deploy Interpol troops or the Red Impulse squadron against Galactor when the Science Ninja Team is unavailable. He personally financed and oversaw the construction of the Crescent Coral Base, an underwater facility for ocean conservation and self-defense weapon development. While the ISO knows of his affiliation with the team, they remain unaware he raised four members. He later assumed Director Anderson's position following Anderson's death. Calm and reserved, Nambu rarely displays strong emotions but possesses a powerful sense of justice. He recruited and mentored the Science Ninja Team to combat Galactor, trusting their abilities despite varied backgrounds. He became legal guardian to Ken Washio, Joe Asakura, Jun, and Jinpei after their parents' deaths or disappearances, maintaining professional detachment with formal excuses to avoid emotional closeness. Ryu Nakanishi, the only member with a living family, was not raised by him. Nambu established Snack Bar J as a residence for Jun and Jinpei and a covert team meeting place, though he never visited. Nambu concealed the truth from Ken Washio about his father, Kentaro Washio, who faked death to become Red Impulse and infiltrate Galactor. Similarly, Nambu rescued Joe Asakura from BC Island after Galactor assassinated Joe's parents (former operatives attempting to defect), faked Joe's death, renamed him, raised him, and withheld details of his parents' Galactor ties. Nambu anticipated Jinpei's tendency to wander off during missions, leveraging it for reconnaissance tasks. Nambu faced multiple Galactor assassination attempts. One plot involved the Devil Star, female assassins using rose bombs reminiscent of the weapon that killed Joe's parents. This forced him into hiding while the team protected him, triggering Joe's traumatic memories and pursuit of revenge. The assassins ultimately failed. In later series, Nambu dies towards the end of Gatchaman Fighter, leaving engineer Kamo as the team's mentor. Some sources mention a "mysterious reincarnation device" he left behind. Nambu's appearance features shoulder-length brown hair, thin eyebrows, and a thick mustache. His signature outfit is a light-blue suit jacket over a yellow shirt, maroon vest, navy blue tie, and dark blue pants; his glasses lack side stems. The OVA adaptation changes his design to a pompadour hairstyle, longer mustache, glasses with stems, and a long pink overcoat over a bright red vest, striped purple shirt, and pinstripe pants. A cancelled Imagi film project reimagined him as Afro-Japanese with dark skin, a prominent afro, and facial hair, initially in a white suit and maroon turtleneck; later concept art depicted him bald with graying facial hair.
