Description
Daiki Asuka, known as Asuka Jr., is a fourteen-year-old top student at St. Paulia's Private School, whose intellectual achievements contrast sharply with his underdeveloped physical strength and motor skills. As the son of Detective Tomoki Asuka, he is driven to surpass his father's failure to capture the phantom thief Saint Tail.
After photographing Saint Tail mid-caper, he receives a special badge from the mayor, granting him unrestricted investigative authority. This allows him to aid police and receive advance notices of Saint Tail's crimes through creative methods—notes, arcade screen messages, or even writing on his sleeping face.
Socially blunt and insensitive, he often offends unintentionally and struggles with romantic feelings or girl-related dynamics. His temper ignites when teased about his Saint Tail failures. Yet during investigations, he demonstrates strategic thinking, bravery, and determination—scaling buildings and crafting meticulous plans. He fiercely guards his role, reacting strongly to interference like Rina Takamiya's.
His complex bond with Meimi Haneoka centers on frequent arguments about Saint Tail and his capture failures. He addresses her formally as "Haneoka," unaware of her growing romantic feelings. Over time, he conflates Meimi with Saint Tail, wrestling with conflicting emotions over which he loves. He worries Meimi merely tolerates him despite disliking their interactions.
Suspecting Meimi is Saint Tail, his obsession shifts from capture to protecting her. He realizes Saint Tail has become an abstract symbol, questioning the ethics of her arrest. This culminates in a love confession to shield Meimi from her double life's dangers.
When Rosemary exposes Saint Tail as Meimi and kidnaps him, captivity leads him to recognize her actions were always meant to support him. During her rescue, he "catches" her mid-fall, forgiving her deception and ending her phantom thief duties.
Eight years later, Asuka Jr. works as a private detective, continuing Saint Tail's mission by using confessional tips from Seira Mimori. He marries Meimi, safeguarding her secret while honoring their legacy.
His journey intersects with supporting figures: Rina Takamiya, the mayor's niece, usurps his investigative role, creating friction through aggressive tactics and romantic interest, leading to a bet about Meimi's identity. Manato Sawatari's journalistic slanders against Saint Tail and flirtations with Meimi provoke Asuka Jr.'s jealousy, underscoring his deepening feelings.
