Description
Kintoki Sakata, originally named Kintoki, stands as the narrative's central figure. Born to nobility in Japan's Heian period, her childhood was shattered when her uncle orchestrated a violent coup, murdering her parents. Forced into survival, her father disguised her as a boy from an early age, a protective ruse against her uncle's ambitions that profoundly shaped her identity and interactions.

Rescued by the samurai Minamoto no Raikō after the family massacre at Mount Ashigara in Sagami Province, Kintoki was brought to the capital. Under Raikō's guardianship, she trained rigorously in martial arts and swordsmanship, honing her combat prowess. She ascended to join Raikō's elite warrior group, the Shitennō (Four Heavenly Kings), serving as a protector of the capital amid plague, political turmoil, and bandit raids. Throughout this time, she maintained her male disguise, becoming renowned for her exceptional skill with an axe.

Over five years, Kintoki's bond with Raikō deepened, marked by unspoken and unresolved mutual feelings that complicated their relationship. The narrative intensifies as bandits from Ōeyama, led by the figure Shuten Dōji, threaten the capital. Unknown to Kintoki, Shuten Dōji is her cousin Ohni-hime, another survivor of the family conflict. Ohni-hime, equally unaware of Kintoki's true gender, sought to "rescue" her cousin from Raikō's influence, believing Kintoki a male relative. This misconception fueled Ohni-hime's actions, manipulated further by Fujiwara no Michinaga, who exploited the bandits to destabilize the capital for political gain.

The climax erupts when Ohni-hime's forces set the capital ablaze, inflicting heavy casualties on Raikō's allies. Amid the chaos, Kintoki is abducted by Ohni-hime and taken to the Ōeyama stronghold. This act forces Raikō into a direct confrontation with the bandits in a final rescue attempt. The story concludes with this decisive clash, Kintoki's ultimate fate unresolved, her role as the conflict's catalyst emphasized. Her arc navigates survival, loyalty, and the tension between her concealed identity and emotional bonds, unfolding against a backdrop of political intrigue and supernatural folklore.
