Description
Keiko Tatsumiya originates as the shrine maiden Keiko Mekata, residing near the Ministry of Finance. The vengeful spirit Taira no Masakado spiritually summons her to serve as his chosen protector against the sorcerer Yasunori Kato, who seeks to destroy Tokyo. She arrives during Tokyo's reconstruction after the Great Kantō earthquake of 1923.
Yoichiro Tatsumiya encounters Keiko praying at Masakado's shrine, courts her, and marries her, integrating her into the Tatsumiya household. As part of the family, Keiko becomes their spiritual guardian, using her powers to shield them from supernatural threats, particularly Kato's repeated targeting of Yukari Tatsumiya's daughter, Yukiko.
Keiko directly confronts Kato when he infiltrates the Tatsumiya home to abduct Yukiko for ritual sacrifice. She pursues him into Tokyo's underground tunnels, engaging in a fierce physical and mystical battle. During this fight, she throws a knife that pierces Kato's hand and gouges out one of his eyes, significantly wounding him. Her intervention coincides with the destruction of the robot Gakutensoku, which disrupts the underground spiritual energy veins and thwarts Kato's plan to awaken the destructive Underground Dragon.
Later, after Kato retreats to a desecrated temple outside Tokyo, Keiko—aided by feng shui expert Shigemaru Kuroda and Masakado's spirit—confronts him for a final battle. Instead of fighting, she channels the bodhisattva Kannon (Kwannon), embodying boundless compassion. This act neutralizes Kato by appeasing the hatred fueling his immortality, causing him to dissipate. The narrative implies Keiko sacrifices her physical form during this transformation.
In other adaptations like the live-action film *Tokyo: The Last Megalopolis*, Keiko shares similar functions—summoned to oppose Kato and partnering with Kuroda for the final battle. However, significant differences exist: she does not marry into the Tatsumiya family, and her confrontation concludes with Kato kidnapping her to Manchuria instead of her dissipating him. The stage play *Babylon Tokyo* and manga adaptations depict variations of her conflicts with Kato, including instances where she sets his head on fire during combat.
