Description
Araki Mataemon, a real historical samurai of the Edo period, was a renowned practitioner of the Yagyu swordsmanship style and founder of Yagyū Shingan-ryū. He died poisoned in 1637 at age 53. The following year, supernatural means orchestrated by Mori Soiken resurrected him from death. This resurrection transformed Mataemon into a demonic entity with enhanced physical capabilities, binding him to serve the forces that returned him to life.

His personality underwent a drastic shift into that of a bloodthirsty, sadistic, and barbaric sociopath. He exhibits extreme brutality, finding amusement in murdering anyone who obstructs him, drinking the blood of enemies, and committing sexual violence against innocent civilians. Mataemon operates alongside other resurrected warriors—Hozoin Inshun, Amakusa Shiro Tokisada, and Botaro Tamiya—collectively serving under Mori Soiken and Shosetsu Yui. They participate in widespread slaughter, indiscriminately targeting civilians, including children, such as during a festival massacre.

Mataemon possesses heightened physical prowess granted by his demonic resurrection. He demonstrates exceptional swordsmanship capable of felling trees with a single strike, moving with preternatural speed and precision. He revels in these demonic abilities during combat. Despite this power, Mataemon remains subservient to Amakusa Shiro Tokisada, the primary leader of the resurrected warriors. After losing an arm in battle, he demanded a replacement limb from his superiors, invoking their promise of immortal life, underscoring his entitlement to supernatural benefits and unwavering loyalty to the demonic cause.

His primary narrative function is as an antagonist opposing the protagonist Yagyu Jubei Mitsuyoshi. Mataemon explicitly states his resurrected purpose is to kill Jubei, whom he deems unworthy of the Yagyu legacy. His resurrection and actions form part of Amakusa Shiro's broader apocalyptic plot seeking vengeance against the Tokugawa shogunate and its supporters. Mataemon's ultimate fate remains unresolved due to the series' unfinished nature.

The resurrection and demonic transformation stripped away any redeeming qualities from his historical persona, positioning him solely as a malevolent force driven by bloodlust and allegiance to his demonic masters. His background as a martial arts founder is overshadowed by his portrayal as a remorseless killer in service of supernatural vengeance.
