Description
Towa Kannagi, one of two identical twins in the secretive Kannagi family, shared a lineage dedicated to researching mermaids. Their hidden repository, Mermaid Hill, held a preserved mermaid corpse and substances derived from it. Terminally ill, Towa was given mermaid blood by her sister Sawa—an act done without their father's knowledge, driven by Sawa's hope for a cure and her own desire to test the blood for eternal youth. Though cured, the blood mutated Towa's right arm into a deformed claw and bleached her hair white. Discovering this, their father confined Towa to an underground cellar, declaring her dead to the world. She endured decades of imprisonment, suffering chronic pain from her mutated arm while witnessing Sawa live fully: marrying and becoming a mother.
Following their father's death, Sawa released Towa. However, Towa harbored profound resentment towards her sister for using her as an experiment while enjoying a normal life. To manage the worsening pain from her deteriorating arm, Towa compelled her fiancé, Dr. Shiina, to repeatedly amputate and replace her right arm with limbs taken from recently deceased young women. Each transplanted arm functioned briefly before mutating and causing agony again, demanding further replacements. Her existence remained isolated, with Dr. Shiina as her sole regular contact.
Towa's motivation solidified into revenge against Sawa. Convinced Sawa owed her suffering, she relentlessly demanded the location of Mermaid Hill, intending to force Sawa to consume mermaid flesh and endure identical physical and psychological torment. This plan intensified when an immortal girl, Mana, was brought to her after a fatal accident. Towa attempted to decapitate Mana to transplant her own head onto Mana's body, seeking a permanent cure. When Mana's companion, Yuta, intervened, Towa imprisoned him and unleashed her mutated dog, Shiro—deformed from licking mermaid blood—to attack him.
Towa's scheme reached its climax at Mermaid Hill. She threatened to kill Mana unless Sawa revealed the mermaid's location. After obtaining mermaid flesh, Towa tried to force-feed it to Sawa, explicitly stating her goal was to inflict immortality and its horrors as retribution. However, Sawa died of a sudden heart attack before consuming the flesh, robbing Towa of her vengeance. In despair, Towa commanded Yuta and Shiina to burn Mermaid Hill and everything within it, including herself and Sawa's body. Her fate differs by adaptation: in the manga and TV series, she perishes in the consuming fire. In the OVA, she actively runs into the flames, and her spirit later reincarnates as an immortal mermaid.
