Description
Operating under the alias Saitani Umetaro, the rōnin Ryoma Sakamoto honors a promise made years earlier to Masurao, Hiwou's father, to protect his family. Following the Wind Gang's destruction of Hiwou's village, Saitani joins the group's journey across Japan, providing essential guidance and protection. As a skilled swordsman and tactician, his samurai background informs his combat abilities and strategic insights during clashes with the Wind Gang. He interacts with historical figures encountered along the way, including Harada Sanosuke, a future Shinsengumi captain.

Saitani's political stance mirrors his historical counterpart's opposition to isolationism, favoring openness to Western ideas and technology. This contrasts sharply with the Wind Gang's radical anti-Western ideology. His perspective manifests through advocating peaceful solutions and criticizing the weaponization of clockwork technology. His complex background includes political entanglements preceding the main events, notably shared involvement with Masurao in the Wind Gang-orchestrated assassination of Ii Naosuke, creating tension over Masurao's current whereabouts and motives.

Throughout the journey from 1861 to 1867, Saitani participates in key historical events alongside Hiwou's group. These include the Namamugi Incident, Katsu Kaishu's efforts to educate sailors in Western methods, and the departure of future Shinsengumi founders from Kiyokawa Hachiro's anti-Western group, grounding the narrative in historical context. His character development reflects the series' conflict between pacifism and militarism; his actions consistently support the protagonists' refusal to weaponize clockwork dolls, positioning him as an ideological counter to the Wind Gang.

Saitani utilizes his historical knowledge and political acumen to navigate challenges, proving valuable when encountering various factions and figures across Japan. He maintains his protective role through all major story arcs: the initial journey to Hida Takayama, events in Kyoto, the confrontation at Shingetsu Clan's Echizen castle, and the final encounter in Choshu, providing stability during the family's search for Masurao and their confrontations.
