Description
Kanai Hosaka, Kenji Miyazawa’s companion during his youth, shares walks with Kenji through natural landscapes. Kanai witnesses Kenji drawing inspiration from these surroundings for his poetry, including the creation of "Telegraph Poles on a Moonlit Night" after observing telegraph poles together. During a mountaintop discussion under a starry sky, Kanai participates in conversations with Kenji about their future dreams, reflecting their shared youthful idealism.
Years later, their friendship shifts when Kenji moves to Tokyo in 1923 and works at a small publishing house. Reuniting after three years apart, Kanai reveals a changed perspective, no longer sharing Kenji’s idealism. He explicitly states their paths have diverged and they cannot pursue their former dreams, rejecting Kenji’s worldview and deepening Kenji’s isolation.
This Tokyo encounter concludes Kanai’s role, transitioning him from a supportive friend into a symbol of Kenji’s growing solitude as his ideals face abandonment by those once close to him.
