OVA
Description
Kiyomi Arai is a central character in the 1995 original video animation Sailor Victory. Her background is established in relation to the preceding OVA series Graduation, where she is depicted as one of five close friends at Seika Girls High School, preparing for graduation and sharing a final adventure together. In the alternate context of Sailor Victory, Kiyomi works as an errand girl for the Central Police Force in Mikado City. In this role, she frequently endures dismissive and sexist treatment from her male superiors, who often task her with menial jobs such as fetching coffee. This experience is a source of deep frustration and resentment for her.
Kiyomi's personality has a notable duality. In her civilian life, she wears glasses that often obscure her eyes, and she typically endures the inconsiderate behavior of her colleagues with visible discontent. However, when she transforms into a member of the superhero team Sailor Victory, her personality shifts dramatically to become fiery, brash, and confrontational. In combat, she is characterized by her cocky and hot-headed nature, frequently taunting her opponents and reacting explosively to situations. Her dialogue is often filled with witty and sarcastic remarks, especially during high-stakes battles, and she is not afraid to express her frustration, famously exclaiming that a situation is "B.S.".
Her primary motivation stems from the disrespect she faces as a young woman in a male-dominated workplace. Transforming into a crime-fighting hero allows her to rebel against that dismissiveness and assert her competence and power. As the leader of the Sailor Victory team, she pilots a giant ninja robot to combat criminals who also use mechanical robots to wreak havoc on Mikado City.
Kiyomi shares key relationships with her four teammates and close friends: Shizuka, the technician; Reiko, the financier; Mika, a delivery girl who is the second lead pilot; and Mami, a clumsy but genius young girl. Her camaraderie is strongest with Mika, but she often displays impatience with Mami's clumsiness and Reiko's overly dramatic speeches. Her combat style is direct and aggressive, contrasting with her teammates' more specialized roles.
Throughout the story, Kiyomi's development is tied to her transition from a put-upon assistant to a commanding and effective leader. Her notable ability is piloting a mechanized ninja robot, which she operates with a brash and aggressive style. While she may not be the most clever strategist, her courage and willingness to confront injustice drive her actions as she and her friends work to protect their city from threats like a bank robber and an evil sorceress.
