Description
Orphaned young, Kagemaru Igano was raised by his grandfather Saizō Igano in the mountains of Iga province, earning the nickname "Kabamaru" ("hippo's mouth") for his enormous appetite. Saizō rigorously trained him in ninja arts alongside fellow orphan Hayate Kirino. A childhood escape attempt saw Hayate abandon Kabamaru to recapture, creating lasting tension. Saizō's strict discipline for failures fostered Kabamaru's resilience but left him academically unskilled and illiterate in standard Japanese. Following Saizō's apparent death, Kabamaru traveled to Tokyo under the care of Ran Ookubo, Saizō's former love interest and headmistress of Kin'gyoku Academy.

Adjusting to urban life challenged Kabamaru, whose coarse manners and unfamiliarity with modern conveniences caused friction. His insatiable hunger frequently led to social awkwardness, especially around Ran's granddaughter, Mai Ookubo, for whom he developed immediate romantic feelings. Mai initially found his behavior repulsive, comparing him unfavorably to animals. At Kin'gyoku, Kabamaru unwittingly became entangled in a decades-old rivalry with Ōgyoku Academy. Kin'gyoku's student council president, Shizune Meijiro, manipulated him, exploiting his physical prowess for schemes against Ōgyoku's leader, Shuu Maejima. Kabamaru's naivety made him susceptible to food bribes, particularly his favorite yakisoba noodles.

Kabamaru possessed exceptional physical abilities honed by ninja training: superhuman speed (capable of running 100 km/h), immense strength allowing him to carry adults effortlessly, catlike reflexes, and the capacity to jump over 200-meter skyscrapers. He typically avoided violence unless provoked, effortlessly defeating harassing thugs while half-asleep. His combat style emphasized evasion and agility over aggression.

Kabamaru's relationship with Hayate evolved from estrangement toward reconciliation. Initially rejecting their bond, Hayate reluctantly worked for Ōgyoku's headmistress Suu Matsuno and was ordered to eliminate Kabamaru, attempting methods like drugged candy and relay race sabotage. A confrontation during a mountain training trip revealed Hayate's lingering guilt over his past betrayal. Hayate later kidnapped Mai to provoke Kabamaru into a serious fight. Their final battle ended with Kabamaru injuring Hayate, triggering Saizō's dramatic revelation that he faked his death to advance Kabamaru's training. This mended their friendship, and both returned to Iga for further training.

Kabamaru's bond with Mai shifted from one-sided attraction to mutual affection. He consistently protected her, most notably rescuing her during a mountain blizzard and caring for her in an isolated shack. This vulnerability sparked Mai's realization of her feelings, leading her to confess and promise reunification before his Iga departure. In later continuity, they married and had a son named "Ko"-Kabamaru Igano.
