Description
Juuzou Suzuya is a Special Class Ghoul Investigator and a central figure in the Commission of Counter Ghoul, known for his exceptional combat skills and his complex psychological journey from a detached, violent individual to a more mature and empathetic leader. Born under the name Rei Suzuya, his past is marked by severe trauma, having been kidnapped and raised as a pet by a powerful and sadistic ghoul known as Big Madam. During this time, he was trained to be a "scrapper," a fighter forced to kill for entertainment at the ghoul restaurant. To preserve his youthful appearance, Big Madam subjected him to a crude castration and forced him to live as a girl. He was eventually rescued during a CCG raid and given a chance to start a new life, choosing the name Juuzou for himself.
In his early years as an investigator, Juuzou is characterized by a childish, careless, and disturbingly violent demeanor. Having been deprived of a normal upbringing, he lacks conventional morals and shows no hesitation or remorse when killing ghouls, treating it almost as a game or a task to be completed cleanly and efficiently. He has a notable disregard for the property of others and his actions are often unpredictable. His only desire during this period is to receive a large quinque, a weapon made from a ghoul's kagune, which he sees as a reward. This ambition leads him to single-handedly finish off the ghoul Yamori, whose body is then used to create his signature weapon, a large scythe-like quinque he names 13's Jason. His appearance during this time is striking and eerie: he has pale skin, red eyes with dark circles, and long white hair styled with red stitching string to form the Roman numeral XIII, a direct reference to the Death Arcana tarot card. His body is covered in self-inflicted stitches, which he uses as both a form of first-aid and body modification.
The most significant turning point in Juuzou's life is his relationship with his mentor and partner, Yukinori Shinohara. Unlike others who fear or distrust the troubled youth, Shinohara treats him with patience and genuine affection, acting as a father figure. Juuzou initially struggles to understand emotions like empathy and the fear of loss, casually dismissing death as a routine occurrence. During the Owl Suppression Operation, a battle against a powerful SSS-rated ghoul, Juuzou loses his right leg but continues to fight. The pivotal moment occurs when he watches the One-Eyed Owl gravely injure Shinohara. For the first time, Juuzou screams out in anguish and terror, finally comprehending the pain of losing someone he cares about. Following the battle, Shinohara falls into a comatose state. This event profoundly changes Juuzou, filling him with guilt and a sense of responsibility.
By the time of Tokyo Ghoul:re, Juuzou has matured significantly. He has dyed his hair black and often wears it longer, tying it in a ponytail or bun, and uses a prosthetic leg to compensate for his lost limb. The stitch patterns on his face change, and his hairpins sometimes shift to represent the Roman numeral XX (the Judgement tarot) and later XXI (the World tarot), symbolizing his personal growth and transformation. As the leader of his own Suzuya Squad, he demonstrates a newfound maturity and a genuine concern for the welfare of his subordinates. He has become a capable mentor, offering sound advice to younger investigators like Tooru Mutsuki. While he retains some of his childish quirks, such as a love for sweets and playing games, he is far more emotionally stable and even shows a capacity to empathize with ghouls, understanding that his job is to eliminate them as a duty rather than out of a sadistic pleasure. He shares a particularly close, respectful relationship with Sasaki Haise, a testament to his ability to form normal bonds with colleagues.
Juuzou's role in the story evolves from that of an unpredictable wild card to one of the CCG's most reliable and powerful leaders. He is considered by some to be a potential successor to the legendary investigator Kishou Arima. His combat abilities are formidable, stemming from a lifetime of brutal conditioning and training. He possesses an extraordinarily high tolerance for pain, enabling him to continue fighting even after suffering grievous injuries, such as having his leg severed or his abdomen sliced open. He is a master acrobat and an expert in knife and scythe combat, able to juggle and wield multiple weapons simultaneously with lethal precision. His primary quinque is 13's Jason, a powerful rinkaku-type scythe, which he often complements with Scorpion 1/56, a set of fifty-six small bikaku-type knife quinques that he can throw or use for close-quarters stabbing. In the latter half of:re, he is entrusted with the Arata Joker, a powerful kakuja armor that greatly enhances his speed and strength but slowly consumes his body. Through his development, Juuzou Suzuya stands as a tragic yet hopeful figure, a victim of extreme cruelty who overcame his past to reclaim his humanity and protect others, all while retaining the unique, unsettling charm that defines him.
