Description
Tsuyoshi Takahashi, a sixth-grade student in eastern Kobe, lives with his parents and younger brother. Driven by academic ambition, he devotes his days to relentless study, determined to secure admission to a prestigious private school. This singular focus fuels resentment toward disruptions, particularly requests for assistance that intrude on his rigid routine.

On January 17, 1995, the Great Hanshin earthquake ravages Kobe, collapsing his home and forcing the family to seek refuge at his school. Amidst the chaos, Tsuyoshi confronts the harsh realities of communal survival: rationed supplies, shared duties, and cramped living conditions. Witnessing volunteers’ selfless acts and the solidarity of strangers sparks a shift in his perspective, challenging his isolationist mindset.

The disaster’s aftermath forces him to grapple with personal loss, including a friend’s death, while supporting a peer consumed by grief. These trials ignite his emotional growth, steering his priorities from individual success to communal responsibility. Conversations with survivors—like an elderly woman stressing resilience and unity—deepen his understanding of collective effort’s power.

Once aloof due to academic obsession, Tsuyoshi gradually attunes to others’ struggles, shedding his self-centered tendencies. His journey culminates in a hard-won equilibrium between personal aspirations and empathy, reflecting a transformed worldview rooted in interdependence and community resilience.
