Eto Yoshimura, a rare natural one-eyed ghoul, was born to ghoul father Yoshimura and human mother Ukina. After Yoshimura was forced to execute Ukina for her secret investigation into the organization V, he entrusted infant Eto to the ghoul Noroi in the hazardous 24th Ward, along with her mother's diary. Her brutal childhood there involved surviving through cannibalism of other ghouls, forging her violent nature and developing her kakuja.
Emerging from the underground, she launched attacks against the Commission of Counter Ghoul (CCG). Her first recorded assault killed Associate Special Class Investigator Kasuka Mado, igniting Kureo Mado's vengeance. Subsequent operations—killing a Special Class Investigator in the 3rd Ward, large-scale strikes against the 2nd Ward Branch Office, and an assault on Cochlea—achieved escalating threat ratings (S to SSS) and the moniker "One-Eyed Owl," referencing her single kakugan and distinctive plumage-like kagune. During this period, she founded and led the militant ghoul group Aogiri Tree, orchestrating raids to free imprisoned ghouls and undermine the CCG.
Simultaneously, under the human alias Sen Takatsuki, she became a best-selling horror novelist. Her debut *Dear Kafka* and subsequent works like *The Black Goat's Egg* explored despair, identity, and systemic oppression, mirroring her experiences. Her human persona displayed a playful, scatterbrained demeanor; she overslept book signings and ignored managerial rules, yet cultivated an intellectual public image. Her novels profoundly influenced characters, notably Ken Kaneki, who admired her work before learning her true nature.
Eto exhibited complex duality. As a ghoul, she displayed sadistic joy in inflicting suffering, remorselessly killing humans and ghouls alike—traits likely forged in the 24th Ward. She wielded acute emotional intuition to manipulate victims and allies, exemplified by psychologically tormenting the Yasuhisa twins during a raid on Kanou's lab, where she lethally extracted Banjou's ribs. Contrastingly, as Sen Takatsuki, she demonstrated calculated kindness, such as advising Hinami Fueguchi on overcoming weakness and offering future aid, ultimately manipulating her into Aogiri. Despite her brutality, she advocated for ending ghoul persecution, viewing the CCG and V as corrupt systems needing destruction.
Her combat prowess ranked among the series' most formidable. As an Ukaku-type ghoul, her kagune fired projectile crystals and morphed into detachable appendages to trap foes. Her kakuja form—a multi-horned, single-eyed monstrosity—granted immense strength, regeneration (regrowing her lower body and decapitated head), and adaptive features like extra limbs, eyes, and mouths. She retained full consciousness in this state, unlike most kakuja users. Post a three-year timeskip, her kagune evolved into grotesque, consciousness-linked extensions capable of speech and physiological manipulation.
Key relationships defined her. She harbored intense hatred for Yoshimura, viewing him as a coward for abandoning her; she exploited him as a ghoulification test subject and used him as bait during the Owl Suppression Operation. She revered her mother Ukina, whose diary guided her defiance of V. Noro (formerly Noroi) served as a surrogate father and loyal subordinate until his death. She shared a sibling-like bond with Aogiri executive Tatara. Her fascination with investigator Koutarou Amon led her to leak CCG corruption intel, destabilizing his faith.
A pivotal alliance formed with investigator Kishou Arima after their early clashes. Recognizing mutual disillusionment, they conspired to groom a "One-Eyed King" to unite ghouls and humans. Kaneki was selected as their successor; Eto monitored his development, calling him "Kakuja's Egg" and later confessing their collaborative efforts to shape him into a symbol of hope. Her declaration of love for him reflected ideological investment, not personal affection.
In her final arc, she publicly revealed her ghoul identity via broadcast, challenging V's narrative and provoking societal division. Captured and imprisoned in Corniculum, she later escaped, destroying the facility's Compactor. She confronted Kichimura Washuu (Furuta), who mortally wounded her. Dying, she consumed her editor Shiono's remains in defiance, reiterating her wish for the One-Eyed King to end systemic oppression. Her death cemented her legacy as a catalyst for Kaneki's kingship and the revolution against V.
A unique physiological trait allowed her to consume human food like daifuku, apples, and snacks without ill effects—a rarity among ghouls shared only by fellow natural one-eyed hybrid Ichika Kaneki.
