Ayumu Hogi is a First Class Investigator in the Commission of Counter Ghoul (CCG), serving as Deputy Squad Leader in the Hachikawa Squad. She possesses a notably short stature, approximately 1.40 meters tall, with long, unkempt blonde hair reaching her waist. She intentionally uses this hairstyle to obscure her face and conceal the freckles on her cheeks, a source of deep insecurity. When her hair is pushed back, her round face and freckles become visible.
Markedly introverted and reticent, Ayumu speaks infrequently. She maintains intense focus during combat operations. Her self-consciousness about her freckles leads her to avoid social interactions outside necessary duties, primarily communicating only with her squad leader, Chuu Hachikawa. Despite her reserved nature, she demonstrates loyalty to superiors and colleagues, executing orders efficiently on missions.
Her operational history includes participation in major CCG initiatives. During the Owl Suppression Operation, she fought alongside Squad 3 against the SS-rated ghoul Black Dog. Though contributing to its defeat, her quinque—a light-colored katana named Youji—was destroyed by Ken Kaneki, rendering her combat-ineffective. She later engaged the powerful ghoul Eto on a rooftop, witnessing the deaths of fellow investigators. She subsequently appeared during the Torso investigation at CCG headquarters alongside Hachikawa.
Her most significant documented involvement occurred during the Rushima Landing Operation. As part of Hachikawa’s squad, she investigated Aogiri Tree’s suspected hideout. After locating their base and observing Eto’s speech, the squad was detected. Following Shikorae’s fatal assault on Hachikawa—during which he tore off Hachikawa’s nose—Ayumu screamed in distress and attempted retaliation. Her attacks proved ineffective against Shikorae’s agility. Tooru Mutsuki intervened, pulling her away as they leaped off a cliff into the ocean to escape; Ayumu sustained arm injuries from Shikorae’s projectile during the fall.
Sheltering in a coastal cave, Mutsuki administered first aid while Ayumu processed Hachikawa’s death. She confided in Mutsuki about her complex relationship with Hachikawa, acknowledging his widely disliked reputation for greed and coarse language. However, she expressed an inability to hate him due to formative positive memories, including an instance where he challenged her insecurity about her freckles by contrasting them with his own scarred face. This interaction fostered her enduring respect for him. Their conversation was abruptly interrupted when the ghoul Torso seized Ayumu by the hair and slammed her against a cave wall.
Ayumu survived Torso’s assault and returned to CCG headquarters. She later attended a high-level briefing with Yoshitoki Washuu and Matsuri Washuu to deliver a firsthand account of the Rushima events. Approximately one month post-operation, she retrieved Mutsuki from a conversation with Saiko Yonebayashi, indicating her continued active duty.
Professionally, Ayumu maintained a close working relationship with Chuu Hachikawa as both her direct superior and former partner. She held unwavering respect for him, valuing his unorthodox mentorship despite his abrasive demeanor. Following his death, she forged a bond with Tooru Mutsuki based on shared trauma and mutual understanding, particularly regarding her philosophy that "no matter who that person is, if there's one good memory, it's hard to hate him."
As a First Class Investigator, Ayumu demonstrated considerable combat proficiency. She effectively wielded her Youji quinque in katana form, holding her own against high-threat ghouls including the SS-rated Black Dog and the A-rated Shikorae before being overwhelmed. Her tactical awareness enabled survival in complex engagements, such as evading Eto’s attacks and navigating the Rushima escape.
Her surname "Hogi" derives from the Japanese word for "broom" (houki), as confirmed by series creator Sui Ishida. She is featured as the "Nine of Clubs" alongside Hachikawa in the Tokyo Ghoul Trump card game.
