Description
Eustachius, officially translated as Justus, serves as an archnoble attendant and scholar, name-sworn to Ferdinand with deep loyalty. His gray hair, brown eyes, and slender build appear ordinary, aiding his ability to blend into crowds for intelligence work. An androgynous face enables effective disguises, including crossdressing as a refined middle-aged lady resembling his mother Rihyarda and sister Gudrun, requiring minimal makeup.
Driven by insatiable curiosity, he relentlessly gathers information, rare materials, and spells, though he lacks interest in analyzing the collected data. This drive frequently overrides survival instincts, endangering himself and others. Justus exhibits a friendly, unrestrained demeanor, speaking candidly regardless of status and even teasing Ferdinand. Yet he holds strong contempt for those neglecting duties and maintains unwavering loyalty to his lord.
His background stems from childhood observations of servants behaving differently away from their masters, sparking his interest in information gathering. Directed by Rihyarda to become a scholar to serve Sylvester, he enrolled in both attendant and scholar courses at the Royal Academy. Facing pressure from Lady Georgine, he chose attendant as his primary course, causing friction. Witnessing Ferdinand’s strategic use of intelligence led him to defy his mother and serve Ferdinand instead, later name-swearing to him. His loyalty extended to divorcing his wife to remain with Ferdinand when forced to choose.
In the story, he continues intelligence work for Ferdinand unofficially after Ferdinand entered the temple. He investigated Myne’s activities in the Lower City, breaking into the Merchant’s Guild with Eckhart when disguises failed. He later assists with temple duties and tax matters.
His abilities encompass exceptional information gathering and mimicry of speech, mannerisms, and lifestyles across social classes. Disguise proficiency includes crossdressing and sewing self-made garments with concealed pockets. Additional skills include lip-reading and sufficient combat capability to overpower apprentice knights and accompany Ferdinand on dangerous excursions. His highbeast takes the form of a bahelm, a horned cow-like feybeast.
Relationships define him as Rihyarda’s son and Gudrun’s brother. He serves alongside Eckhart as one of Ferdinand’s closest retainers, sharing mutual trust. He interacts with Rozemyne, whom he addresses as “milady,” though banned from her Pandabus due to disruptive questioning. His eccentricity includes collecting forbidden illustrations of Ferdinand and causing near-disasters, like nearly triggering Mount Lohenberg’s eruption by stealing Riesefalke eggs.
