Juuzou Suzuya, originally Rei Suzuya, serves as a Special Class Ghoul Investigator for the Commission of Counter Ghoul (CCG). Abducted in childhood by the ghoul Big Madam, he endured systematic torture within the Ghoul Restaurant, becoming a "Scrapper" named "Juuzou". This included crude castration to enforce an androgynous appearance, eroding his sense of pain, fear, and morality. Manipulated by Big Madam's "Good Boy Points" system, he killed humans for approval. After his first kill, he fell sick for days before his empathy vanished entirely. Rescued during a CCG raid on Big Madam's estate, his violent tendencies remained. Investigator Yukinori Shinohara advocated for his rehabilitation, securing his enrollment at the CCG Academy Junior School at age 16. There, he was wrongly blamed for animal killings committed by others, becoming an outcast. At 19, CCG Chairman Tsuneyoshi Washuu appointed him a Rank 3 Investigator. He adopted the name "Juuzou Suzuya" from his Scrapper alias, forging a new identity and partnering with Shinohara in the 20th Ward. Initially deemed a "problem child" by Shinohara, Juuzou exhibited a childish yet violently disturbed demeanor. He took pride in efficient, ruthless killing methods and lacked awareness of death's gravity, viewing it as routine. Early behaviors included stealing Ken Kaneki's wallet and assaulting a police officer. He showed no empathy and recklessly engaged powerful foes alone, like during the Owl Suppression Operation where his solo attack proved disastrous. A pivotal shift occurred when Shinohara suffered critical injury by the One-Eyed Owl; Juuzou's anguished reaction revealed a capacity for deep attachment. After Shinohara entered a decade-long coma, Juuzou expressed profound guilt, bowing and apologizing to Shinohara's wife and kissing Shinohara's forehead. Post-timeskip, he matured significantly, becoming calmer and more supportive. He mentored subordinates like Tooru Mutsuki, advising him to harness fear, and led his own squad with dedication. Though retaining childish quirks like bringing candy to meetings, he emphasized duty over personal vendettas, telling Big Madam he would kill her solely because it was his job. Despite increased warmth toward humans, he remained merciless toward ghouls. Juuzou's appearance reflects his psychological state. He possesses an androgynous face, pale skin, and red eyes with dark circles. Early in his career, he sported shoulder-length white hair pinned with red clips forming the Roman numeral XIII (13). His body featured self-stitched red thread markings, including X-shapes below his right eye and lines on his neck, arms, and hands. He wore a half-buttoned white suit, polka-dotted red suspenders, black pants, and red slippers. After losing his right leg below the knee during the Owl Suppression Operation, he used a prosthetic leg with hidden knife compartments. In Tokyo Ghoul:re, his hair was dyed black and shortened, with altered stitch patterns. Later, his hair grew longer, often tied in a bun or ponytail, and his stitches reverted to the original X-shapes below his eye while disappearing below his lip. His hair clips changed to the Roman numeral XX (20). His attire shifted to a black suit with red-and-yellow triangle-patterned suspenders. Juuzou's combat prowess evolved through specialized quinques. Early on, he wielded Scorpion 1/56, 56 Rank B throwing knives derived from a Bikaku kagune, stored in his prosthetic leg. After defeating the ghoul Yamori, he obtained 13's Jason, a S+-ranked Rinkaku quinque shaped like a jagged scythe capable of piercing steel and injuring kakuja. His most potent weapon, Arata Joker, was a Koukaku kakuja quinque that attached as armor, drastically enhancing his speed and strength to overpower SS-rated ghouls like Kurona, though it damaged his body, causing severe bleeding even during brief use. He also employed submachine guns with Q-Bullets. Key traits included inhuman pain tolerance—fighting through disembowelment or limb loss—and tactical ingenuity, like improvising with stolen quinques during the Kanou Lab raid. Post-timeskip, he refined his swordsmanship and leadership, coordinating squad operations against high-threat ghouls. Juuzou's relationships highlight his development. He called Big Madam "mama" or "father," acknowledging her role in scarring him physically and mentally yet claiming no hatred. His bond with Shinohara resembled father-son dynamics; Shinohara provided structure and donuts, while Juuzou's devastation at his injury revealed deep dependence. Shinohara's recovery after a decade-long coma brought Juuzou visible joy. With squad member Hanbee Abara, Juuzou balanced blunt criticism of Hanbee's timidity with pride in his growth. He respected Kishou Arima professionally, collaborating on operations. His interactions with Haise Sasaki involved reciprocal understanding: Juuzou returned stolen money, while Sasaki offered sweets during meetings. Juuzou deduced Sasaki was Kaneki but maintained professionalism until Sasaki defected, later acknowledging him as a "friend" while accepting their opposing roles. He advised Tooru Mutsuki on overcoming fear and taught him knife techniques. He showed indifference toward Seidou Takizawa's aggression and restrained himself when Itsuki Marude mocked his castration, following Shinohara's guidance to ignore provocations. Juuzou participated in critical CCG operations. In the 20th Ward, he investigated the Binge Eater and slaughtered ghouls who targeted him. During the Aogiri Tree arc, he infiltrated their 11th Ward hideout, clearing enemies with a stolen motorcycle and submachine gun before executing the wounded Yamori. In the Kanou Lab raid, he fought former academy classmates Kurona and Nashiro Yasuhisa, stabbing Kurona with multiple Scorpions and nearly killing Nashiro with Jason. He later joined Koutarou Amon against Kaneki, prioritizing Shinohara's injuries over pursuit. The Owl Suppression Operation forced him to confront his past; he recalled being scapegoated at the academy before aiding the assault on Yoshimura. His leg was severed during Eto's counterattack, but he continued fighting until Arima intervened. In Tokyo Ghoul:re, he led the Nutcracker investigation and the auction raid, where he confronted Big Madam. Though initially hesitant, he allowed Hanbee Abara to cover his ears as CCG forces executed her, stating it was his duty. After Arima's death, he was declared the "Next Arima," assuming command of the S3 Squad and becoming CCG's strongest investigator. During the Dragon War, he utilized Arata Joker against Ken Kaneki, sustaining severe injuries. Post-conflict, he joined the Tokyo Security Committee to maintain peace.
