Description
Miku Hatsune is an eleven-year-old girl who serves as the driver of the Shinkalion H5 Hayabusa, affiliated with the Hokkaido branch of the Shinkansen Ultra Evolution Institute. She first appears in the television series and later returns in the film Shinkansen Henkei Robo Shinkalion: Mirai Kara Shinsoku no ALFA-X, where she participates in a live concert scene singing the franchise’s theme song. Her design is visually inspired by the virtual singer Hatsune Miku, and her character is a distinct individual within the Shinkalion universe.
Miku excels in both academic studies and kendo, demonstrating a sharp intellect and disciplined physical training. She possesses a high aptitude for piloting a Shinkalion, making her a capable and valued member of the team. However, she struggles with motion sickness while driving, an obstacle that leads her to view herself as a failure as a driver. This internal conflict drives her to push herself harder in training, as she is determined to overcome her weakness and prove her worth.
Personality-wise, Miku is a tsundere type. She often acts prickly or competitive, especially towards the main protagonist Hayato Hayasugi, but her harsh exterior hides a sincere dedication to her duties and a desire to be acknowledged. Her pride and perfectionist tendencies clash with her own perceived shortcomings, creating a character who is both self-critical and motivated. She is a loyal ally who actively supports the other drivers in defending Earth from alien threats, notably during the events of the ALFA-X movie, when the team must face the new enemies Nahane and Ohanefu.
Throughout the story, Miku’s role remains that of a supporting driver who contributes to the collective effort. Her relationships with the other child pilots are cooperative, though she maintains a rivalrous dynamic with Hayato. Her development centers on gradually accepting her own limitations while continuing to improve, showing resilience and a strong sense of responsibility. She does not undergo a dramatic transformation but rather reaffirms her commitment to the team’s mission and her own growth as a driver. Her notable abilities include her combat skills from kendo, her academic excellence, and her high synchronization with the Shinkalion H5 Hayabusa, which allows her to operate the mecha effectively despite her motion sickness.
