Description
Hayato Hayasugi is the main protagonist of Shinkansen Henkei Robo Shinkalion. He is an 11-year-old boy who lives in Omiya, Saitama Prefecture. His birthday is October 17th, 2007.

Hayato is the son of Hokuto Hayasugi, one of the core developers of the government's top-secret Shinkalion Project and a director at the Shinkansen Ultra Evolution Institute. Influenced heavily by his father, Hayato is a dedicated railway enthusiast with an encyclopedic knowledge of trains. His obsession is so profound that he habitually communicates using railway terminology and metaphors, often comparing everyday situations to train schedules, routes, or operations in a way that only his close friends have learned to decipher. Despite this quirky and sometimes obsessive personality, Hayato is fundamentally a cheerful, friendly, loyal, and just young boy who possesses a strong sense of friendship and justice.

Hayato stumbled into becoming a pilot for the Shinkansen Ultra Evolution Institute after accidentally discovering his father's secret workplace. He was officially designated as the Driver of the Shinkalion E5 Hayabusa, a powerful mecha that serves as the core unit for combining with other Shinkalions to perform finishing moves. Initially, he faced challenges such as a fear of heights and poor sense of direction, but through rigorous training, he improved his abilities. His unique strength lies in his ability to achieve over 100% compatibility with his Shinkalion, making him a uniquely powerful pilot. Later, he upgrades to pilot the Shinkalion E5 Hayabusa MkII, which features golden accents, twin-barreled chest blasters, and a radiant pink katana.

Throughout the story, Hayato's primary motivation is to protect the peace of Japan and the world from various threats. Initially fighting against the Kitoralsus, he later confronts extraterrestrial invaders named Nahane and Ohanefu. In the film Shinkansen Henkei Robo Shinkalion: Mirai Kara Shinsoku no ALFA-X, a new crisis unfolds when his father, Hokuto, goes missing during an enemy attack. This event causes Hayato great anxiety. The situation is further complicated by the sudden appearance of a nine-year-old version of Hokuto, who has slipped through time and space to pilot the prototype Shinkalion ALFA-X. This leads to a unique alliance where Hayato must work alongside a younger version of his own father to confront the universe's strongest enemy.

Hayato shares a close bond with his family, which includes his father Hokuto, his mother Sakura, and his younger sister Haruka. He is childhood friends with Azusa Ueda, having known her since kindergarten. As a pilot, he develops strong tactical synergy with his teammates Akita Oga and Tsuranuki Daimonyama, whose combat styles complement his own.

As the series progresses, Hayato evolves from a boy who is socially awkward due to his narrow focus on railways into a strategic leader and skilled combatant. His growth is marked by his ability to unite his team and defend the convictions of others. By the time of Shinkalion Z, he has matured into a mentor for new pilots, passing on his legacy while maintaining his enduring commitment to teamwork and resilience.
