Movie
Description
Kanji Gozu holds the position of chief for both the Mobile Rescue Police and the Mobile Assault Police, granting him full authority over the Drive Head project. He is a man with short brown hair and brown eyes, typically dressed in a blue jacket over a white shirt and red tie. Gozu is characterized by a serious and practical nature, yet he is usually quite amicable, earning him the respect of his colleagues and subordinates. His name carries symbolic meaning, with his surname translating to cow head and his given name combining the concepts of tolerant and cure.
Gozu first appears during the testing phase of the Sonic Interceptor, observing the initial tests before Gou Kurumada becomes its driver, and he later approves the deployment of Drive Heads 02 and 03. Throughout the series, he is deeply involved in critical strategic discussions, particularly following the return of Dr. Karigari to Japan. His role often requires balancing operational caution with necessary action, as demonstrated when he orders Shun Kuroeda to halt a pursuit during a storm, judging that Kuroeda's attack-oriented Drive Head would face unacceptable risks in a rescue scenario. Gozu also shows pragmatic judgment during crises, such as when he appoints Arisa Munakata as temporary commander of the Mobile Rescue Police after Commander Saionji is trapped in an endangered oil plant.
Gozu maintains key professional relationships as the superior officer to both Takahito Saionji and Shun Kuroeda. He formally introduces the Mobile Rescue Police drivers to Kuroeda, bridging the two divisions. During the investigation of the Black Chips, devices that emit sound waves inducing erratic behavior, Gozu is directly involved and even finds himself attacked by Hayato Isurugi under their influence, an incident resolved by Kuroeda's intervention. When the team discovers that the Evil AI originated from the Ark supercomputer buried beneath the Tower of Babel, Gozu objects to investigating without evidence, given the tower's status as an important government project. He reluctantly accepts Kuroeda's controversial solution of creating a diversion to gain access.
Gozu demonstrates notable development in his willingness to trust unconventional solutions. After the Akashic Tower incident where Dr. Karigari captured him and trapped him with fake explosives, Gozu authorizes the Drive Head Mk-II project. Later, when the threat of Terra escalates and corrupts the Justice Circuits in the Drive Gears, Gozu and his staff suspend the child drivers from piloting. He then collaborates with Saionji, Kurumada, and Kuroeda to recruit temporary pilots from the Mobile Assault Police, pragmatically acknowledging that while these substitutes cannot maximize the Drive Heads potential, they can operate them at a basic level for disaster response. When Kurumada and Saionji depart for the battlefield, Gozu assumes command in the control room. He supports the use of modified technology from Dr. Karigari when proven effective, prioritizing trust in the drivers judgment over institutional prejudice. Gozu does not appear in the 2018 web series despite his recurring role in the television series and movie.
